The Shaykh :[Al-Buruj 85:4] This is the answer to the oath [Al-Buruj 85:4] meaning they were cursed and destroyed. The companions of the trench were a people of tyranny, and may Allah protect us from that, who disbelieved in their messengers and harmed those who followed them, to the extent that they killed them. They dug trenches, which are deep ditches, and kindled fire in them. They would bring a man, and if he testified to the truth, they would throw him into the fire, but if he testified to falsehood, they would leave him.
[Al-Buruj 85:4-5] The fire with its fuel means that it was a great, blazing fire that did not care about anyone. Most of the believers, and praise be to Allah, were patient with this and swallowed the axes of death to remain in the Hereafter.
[Al-Buruj 85:7] They, meaning the companions of the trench, these are the chiefs of the arrogant. They are capable of what they do to people. Why do they do this thing? Why do they hold a grudge against the believers for their faith? Allah the Mighty and Majestic said: [Al-Buruj 85:8-9] This is what they held a grudge against them for. Is this something for which one takes revenge?
The answer is: No, rather this requires honoring him and restraining them so that he does not turn away from his religion. It is not his due that he be tortured and they be harsh with him until he dies.
