Matters in which scholarly disagreement is permissible (the ruling on the sitting of rest)
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : For example, the scholars (may Allah have mercy on them) differed regarding the sitting of rest, which is called the sitting of rest. This is the sitting a person makes when he stands up for the second unit in a four-unit, three-unit, or two-unit prayer, or when he stands up for the fourth unit in a four-unit prayer. Is this sitting a recommended practice or not? And is it a recommended practice in all cases, or is there a detailed ruling regarding it? There are three opinions on this: one that it is a recommended practice in all cases, one that it is not a recommended practice in all cases, and a third that distinguishes between cases, stating that if a person needs to sit due to old age, illness, or something similar, he should sit, otherwise he should not sit. This is a matter of scholarly disagreement. However, some people today have taken this disagreement as a cause for conflict, enmity, and hatred. So if one of them sees a man who does not sit, while he believes that sitting is a recommended practice, he dislikes and hates him, may Allah protect us from that. And if he sees one who sits, while he is among those who do not consider sitting to be a recommended practice, he dislikes and hates him. This is not permissible. The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) differed in matters greater than this, and likewise the Imams among the scholars differed in matters greater than this, and there was no enmity or hatred between them.
