The Shaykh : Now, if someone were to say: "The first view is refuted by the statement of Allah the Exalted: [Al-Qalam 68:42] The word 'leg' is not attributed to Allah, and you say that the intended meaning is the leg of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). Therefore, your rule has been refuted. How do we answer?" We answer: Yes, there are two views among the Salaf regarding this verse. One view is that the intended meaning of 'leg' is severity. The other view is that the intended meaning of 'leg' is the leg of the Creator (Mighty and Majestic). Pay attention, however, those who held the second view did not rely on the apparent meaning of the verse, because the apparent meaning of the verse is that the leg is not attributed to Allah, and it is not permissible for us to attribute to Allah what He has not attributed to Himself, ever. But on what did they rely? They relied on the Sunnah in the long hadith of Abu Sa'id, in which our Lord (Mighty and Majestic) uncovers His leg, and every one who used to prostrate to Allah the Exalted in this world prostrates to Him, while those who used to prostrate out of showing off and seeking fame are unable to prostrate. When you compare the hadith with the verse, you find that the context of the verse applies exactly to what the hadith indicates, because Allah the Exalted said: [Al-Qalam 68:42] So we say: We did not affirm the leg except where the context of the verse is what? In agreement with the Sunnah, the hadith of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). Otherwise, we would say: It is not permissible for us to say that we attribute the leg to Allah, because Allah has not attributed it to Himself.
