Directing supplication to other than Allah is shirk (associating partners with Allah) with Allah the Exalted
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : To whom do you turn in times of hardship? To Allah. This is the most important thing. The one who turns in times of hardship to so-and-so, or to a king, or to anyone other than Allah, has no fasting, no prayer, no Hajj, no charity, and nothing of his righteous deeds will benefit him. Why? Because he is one who associates partners with Allah (Mighty and Majestic). Indeed, whoever supplicates to other than Allah has associated partners with Allah [Ghafir 40:60].
So Allah made supplication what? Worship. And worship is not directed to other than Allah.
And my brother, what harm is there in you saying, "O Lord," instead of saying, "O so-and-so"? What harm is there? None at all. Rather, if you say, "O so-and-so," and you attach your heart to so-and-so, you have turned away from Allah (Mighty and Majestic).

The Shaykh : After the prayer, if Allah wills, the rest of the lesson and the answers to the questions will follow. Now, regarding the one who wants to perform the sunnah (recommended practice) between the adhan (call to prayer) and the iqamah (second call, immediately before prayer).
And your Lord says, "Call upon Me; I will respond to you." Indeed, those who disdain My worship will enter Hell [rendered] contemptible.
