The Sign of Allah's Love.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : If someone were to ask: What is the sign of Allah's love? If someone were to ask what is the sign of Allah's love? We all say that we love Allah, and we ask Allah to make this love a reality in our hearts.
The student: Amen.

The Shaykh : But what is the sign? Listen to the sign from Allah
Say, [O Muhammad], "If you should love Allah, then follow me قل إن كنتم تحبون الله فاتبعوني
[Ali 'Imran 3:31]
This is the scale, this is the scale of love, because love, as I told you just now, is based on what?
The student: ...

The Shaykh : On the will. So if a person loves his Lord, he must worship Him according to His Shari'ah, and His Shari'ah is what His Messenger Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) brought. Following the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) is what realizes the love of Allah.
And look, my brother, following is surrounded by two loves. Following the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) is surrounded by two loves: a preceding love and a subsequent love. The preceding love is from the person, and the subsequent love is from Allah. Which of the two is the greater fruit? The first or the second? The subsequent one. Listen to the verse:
Say, [O Muhammad], "If you should love Allah قل إن كنتم تحبون الله
[Ali 'Imran 3:31]
Is this a preceding love or a subsequent one? It is preceding.
then follow me, [so] Allah will love you فاتبعوني يحببكم الله
[Ali 'Imran 3:31]
"Allah loves you" is the subsequent one, and it is the original and the beneficial one. For this reason, the Lord (Mighty and Majestic) did not say, "Follow Me and you will be truthful in your love for Allah." He said:
then follow me, [so] Allah will love you فاتبعوني يحببكم الله
[Ali 'Imran 3:31]
Because this is the fruit. And for this reason, in the well-known supplication:
O Allah, I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and the love of the deeds that bring me closer to Your love. اللهم إني أسألك حبّك وحبّ من يحبّك وحبّ العمل الذي يقربني إلى حبّك
Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 18:129
.
So love must involve the oneness of Allah (tawhid) with it, such that no one among the creation is equal to Allah in this love. And the love of all the creation is subordinate to the love of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). And this, which I mean by the love subordinate to the love of Allah, is the beneficial one. As for natural love, or love for a worldly purpose, this may be beneficial and it may be harmful. But the beneficial love is the love of Allah (Mighty and Majestic).
These are three matters we will limit ourselves to tonight: the oneness of Allah in worship, what? In fear, in love.
