Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : This questioner, Ahmad A from Riyadh, says: O esteemed Shaykh, what is the ruling on one who spends a large portion of his salary on oud oil, incense, or other fragrances? And is the saying of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) "I have been made to love three things from your worldly life", where he mentioned fragrance among them, referring to oud oil in our time? I ask for guidance. May Allah reward you.

The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, the Seal of the Prophets, the Imam of the Pious, and the Leader of the White-ankled Ones, and upon his family and his Companions, and those who follow them with excellence until the Day of Judgment. There is no doubt that fragrance and the use of fragrance are good and a virtue, first because it is among the things that were made beloved to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family).
And secondly, because it is among the things that expand the soul and make the heart pleasant.
And thirdly, because it is among the things that make a person light-hearted and beloved to people among them. Therefore, you find that a man who has a foul smell is one with whom a person wishes not to sit for even a blink of an eye. All fragrance is good, but extravagance in spending on it falls under the saying of Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He
and do not be extravagant ولا تُسرفوا
. Perhaps some people will be extravagant in fragrances and fall short in what is obligatory for them regarding those whose maintenance is obligatory upon them. You will find that he falls short in food and drink and clothing for those whose maintenance is obligatory upon him, and he spends most of his wealth on fragrance. This is undoubtedly an error. And Allah, Mighty and Majestic, praised those who, when they spend, neither are extravagant nor stingy, but hold a middle course between that.
As for what the questioner indicated regarding his statement about the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family)
I have been made to love three things from your worldly life: women, fragrance, and prayer حُبّب إلي من دنياكم ثلاث النساء والطيب والصلاة
, this has no validity. For the hadith that was reported from the Prophet (peace be upon him) is
I have been made to love from your worldly life women and fragrance, and I have made the coolness of my eyes in prayer حبّب إلي من دنياكم النساء والطيب وجعلت قرة عيني في الصلاة
Sunan al-Bayhaqi 10:849
, and he did not say "I have been made to love three things". And it is not consistent for a person to say, "I have been made to love three things from the world: women, fragrance, and prayer," because prayer is not among the deeds of the world, but rather it is among the deeds of the Hereafter. Indeed, if a person intends the world with his prayer, his prayer will be returned to him because he did not make it sincere for Allah. So the brother questioner must be aware of this issue, and those who listen to our speech must also be aware of it, that the hadith is not in the wording the questioner stated, "I have been made to love three things from your worldly life", but rather its correct form is
I have been made to love from your worldly life women and fragrance, and I have made the coolness of my eyes in prayer حبب إلي من دنياكم النساء والطيب وجعلت قرة عيني في الصلاة
Sunan al-Bayhaqi 10:849
.
On this occasion, I warn my Muslim brothers against transmitting fabricated hadiths that are lies attributed to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), or weak ones, unless a person intends to mention them to people to clarify their fabrication or weakness. This is good and fine.
As for mentioning them as if they have a basis and are authentic, this is not permissible. And it is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) that he said
He who lies about me deliberately will certainly come to his abode in Hell. من كذب علي متعمدا فليتبوّأ مقعده من النار
Sunan Abi Dawud 3651Sahih (Al-Albani)
and he said
He who relates from me something which he deems false من حدث عني بحديث يرى أنه كذب
Riyad as-Salihin 1548
or
which he knows is a lie, then he is one of the liars. يُرى أنه كذب فهو أحد الكاذبين
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2662Sahih (Darussalam)
, meaning that he has the sin of the liar, and I seek refuge in Allah. So it is not permissible for anyone to attribute a hadith to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) unless it is authentic or good and accepted by the scholars of knowledge. As for the weak ones or the fabricated ones, it is not permissible for anyone to transmit them.
And we see from time to time pamphlets being published in which fabricated hadiths are lies attributed to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). The scholars of hadith know that they have no basis and that they are lies. And yet, people circulate them, until some of them stand at the traffic signals. When the cars stop, he begins to distribute them to them. He thinks he is doing a good deed, but in reality, he is doing a bad deed to himself and to others. He misleads people without guidance. Just as we see from time to time other pamphlets attributed to the Messenger (peace be upon him) with false claims. So beware, beware of these things that are attributed to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), whether the attribution is in a state of wakefulness or in a dream.
And it is obligatory for the layperson, if such a thing falls into his hands, to present it to the scholars of knowledge among him so that the truth becomes clear. And I urge my brothers, the students of knowledge, who know the falsehood of such things, when such a thing is presented to them, that one of them should write, if Allah wills, on this paper, then photocopy it and distribute it, so that the falsehood is refuted by this truth. Yes.

The questioner : May Allah bless you. The last paragraph says: O esteemed Shaykh, is the fragrance oud oil in our time?

The Shaykh : Fragrance is everything that has a pleasant smell, whether it is basil, rose, oud oil, or anything else.

The questioner : Very well.

The Shaykh : Yes.
