Benefits of the Verse: “The Path of Those Upon Whom You Have Bestowed Favor, Not Those Upon Whom You Are Angry, Nor Those Who Go Astray”

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Then He said:
The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor صراط الذين أنعمت عليهم
[Al-Fatihah 1:7]
to the end of it.
Among the benefits of this noble verse is the mention of detail after generalization
(6) Guide us to the straight path - (7) The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have evoked [Your] anger or of those who are astray. إهدنا الصراط المستقيم صراط الذين أنعمت عليهم
[Al-Fatihah 1:6-7]
, for there is benefit in detailing after generalizing, as when speech is presented in a general form, the soul anticipates and longs for detail and clarification. So He said:
The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor صراط الذين أنعمت عليهم
[Al-Fatihah 1:7]
. There is also a second benefit in it, which is the clarification that those upon whom Allah has bestowed favor are upon the straight path.
Another benefit of it, and of the verses following it, is the division of people into three categories: a category upon whom Allah has bestowed favor, another category upon whom Allah is angry, and a category that is astray. Those upon whom Allah has bestowed favor are, as previously mentioned, those who knew the truth and followed it. As for those upon whom Allah is angry, they are those who knew the truth and contradicted it. As for those who are astray, they are those who were ignorant of the truth.
The causes of going astray and deviating from the straight path are either ignorance or stubbornness. Who are those whose deviation was caused by stubbornness? They are those upon whom Allah is angry, with the Jews at their head. And those whose deviation was caused by ignorance are: everyone who does not know the truth, with the Christians at their head. This is with regard to their state before the Prophet’s mission, meaning the Christians. As for after the mission, they knew the truth, so they became the same as the Jews, all of them being upon whom Allah is angry, and indeed they are more severe, because they believe in abrogation, meaning the Christians. For this reason, they believe that the law of Jesus abrogates the law of Moses. The Jews do not believe in that, so they are upon a false path, and those [the Christians] contradicted themselves by believing in the abrogation of laws in Jesus with regard to the law of Moses, but not believing in the abrogation of laws in the law of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) with regard to the law of Jesus. Thus, they were contradictory, and their path was more wicked than the path of the Jews.
In any case, this surah is great, and it is not possible for me or for anyone else to encompass its great meanings, but this is a drop from the ocean.
