Among the benefits of these noble verses is the virtue of prayer and that it is the highest of the types of physical deeds, and for this reason it always comes after faith, as He said: .
And among its benefits is the exhortation to establish prayer, and that a person should perform it completely in the manner that pleases the Lord, Mighty and Majestic, who made it obligatory upon His servants. As for one who prays a prayer that has no spirit in it, or a prayer that does not suffice formally, or the like of that, then he is not one who establishes prayer. Do you understand? I mean, perhaps a person comes and prays a prayer that is the most perfect it can be outwardly, so in terms of the form he has established it; he stands, he bows with humility in the head, he is tranquil in the bowing, he is tranquil in the prostration, but his heart is in one place and his body is in another. Did he establish it? No, he did not establish it. It is a shell, an inflated shell, but when you look inside, there is no kernel due to the lack of humility. For this reason, you find that many people come out of prayer without feeling that they hate evil or hate indecency, even though Allah says:[Al-'Ankabut 29:45] But they do not feel that because it is the shells of prayer. We ask Allah to help us and you with humility in prayer, because what we struggle with most now is this. I mean, the issue of the form, that a person comes to prayer with outward tranquility, is an easy thing. But the talk is about the kernel, which is humility; that is a difficult matter. But try once after another. Every time Satan pulls your heart away, return it, and be certain that from the moment you pull it toward prayer, you will see a pulling toward prayer. He will return it, he will find there a tug-of-war, but persist, and if Allah wills, in the end it will cease. Now, among the establishment of prayer is the tranquility in it, which some people have lost, and especially in the two pillars between the bowing and the prostration and between the two prostrations. These two pillars are neglected by some people. You find him saying, "Allah hears the one who praises Him," "Allahu Akbar." What did you say? Were you tranquil? You were not tranquil. This person has no prayer; if he prays until the Day of Judgment, there is no prayer for him, because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the man: "Then raise your head," meaning from the bowing until you are upright, and in another wording, "until you are tranquil while standing." Tranquility is necessary. And in any case, there is no need for us to come to the prayer with all that some people spoil in it, because it is well known.
