The Ruling on Khushu' and Tranquility in Prayer

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
This questioner says, "O Shaykh, may Allah preserve you: A person does not have khushu' in his prayer. Is the prayer valid? And is this a hadith:
Of your prayer, only what you understood is yoursليس لك من صلاتك إلا ما عقلت منها
Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah 4:82
?"

Answer:
Yes, it is a hadith, an authentic hadith,
A person has nothing of his prayer except what he comprehends of itليس للإنسان من صلاته إلا ما عقل منها
So if he has khushu' in it and attains the obligatory tranquility, it is valid. However, the perfection of that is complete khushu', as Allah the Exalted said:
Certainly will the believers have succeeded:قَدْ أَفْلَحَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۝
[Al-Mu'minun 23:1]
those who are humble in their prayers [Al-Mu'minun:1-2]. Complete khushu' in his prostration, bowing, between the two prostrations, and after bowing. And tranquility is necessary; he must be tranquil until every vertebra returns to its place. This is necessary; it is a pillar. And adding to this—extra khushu'—is better and more perfect. As for tapping it out, where he taps it and does not attain tranquility in bowing or prostration, it is not valid. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw an Arab man praying and he did not complete his bowing or prostration, he ordered him to repeat it and said:
go back and pray for indeed you have not prayedصل فإنك لم تصل
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2692Sahih (Darussalam)
So he ordered him to repeat the prayer. But if he is somewhat tranquil in his bowing, prostration, between the two prostrations, and after bowing, but it is not much, then this is leaving off what is best. The best is to increase and complete it, so that his khushu' is more perfect, and he increases in tranquility.

The presenter: May Allah reward you and bless you.
