You said: If you hear thunder, you are safe from the lightning bolt. Is there in the verse: “Therein are darknesses, thunder, and lightning. They put their fingers in their ears because of the lightning bolts” — is that so?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Shaykh, you said if you hear thunder, you are safe from the lightning bolt. Is this verse:
within which is darkness, thunder and lightning. They put their fingers in their ears against the thunderclapsفيه ظلمات ورعد وبرق يجعلون أصابعهم في آذنهم من الصواعق
[Al-Baqarah 2:19]
The Shaykh : No, that is their assumption, their assumption that they are safe, but they are not safe, because Allah said:
But Allah is encompassing of the disbelievers. والله محيط بالكافرين
[Al-Baqarah 2:19]
The questioner : So this statement is not absolute? The Shaykh : No, it is not absolute. The questioner : If it repeats?

The Shaykh : Leave it. If it repeats, it is a new charge. That is why we said the previous charge before the thunder; if you hear the thunder, you will not be struck.

The questioner : Could you be struck by the lightning bolt with this same rain?

The Shaykh : Yes, but from a new charge. If the lightning repeats, it may come from a direction you did not hear first.

The questioner : There is a big difference between the sound and the flash of the lightning.

The Shaykh : Yes, yes?
