Fatwa No. ( 21301 )
Q: I vowed to Allah that if He grants me a son, I will name him Ra'd after Surat al-Ra'd;
so that his name would be legitimate and so that I would not pass through the stages and the sin I went through, and now the time for my child's birth, who is known as (Ra'd), is approaching, but many people frighten me about the name itself. What is your opinion on it? I have performed istikhara for Allah regarding it several times, and I saw things that brought peace to my heart, such as seeing him memorize the Qur'an quickly. Please issue a ruling on this, and may you have abundant thanks.
A: What you mentioned is a vow to do a permissible act. If you wish, name him with this name; if you wish, leave it and name him with another. You must pay the expiation for an oath: freeing a slave, or feeding ten poor people, with each poor person receiving one and a half kilograms of food, or clothing them, with each poor person receiving a garment. If you cannot find the means, then you must fast for three days. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
