The Shaykh : Is this death real or not? Abdullah?
The student: It is real.

The Shaykh : Yes, it is real.
The student: Because sleep is called death.

The Shaykh : It is called death, yes. What are the stories in which the dead are brought back to life, other than this story?
The student: The story of the man of the cow, that is one. Yes, the story of Ibrahim with the birds,
My Lord, show me how You give life to the dead
[Al-Baqarah 2:260]
Yes, and the story of
the one who passed by a township which had fallen into ruinالذي مر على قرية وهي خاوية على عروشها
[Al-Baqarah 2:259]

The Shaykh
So Allah caused him to die for a hundred years; then He revived him.
[Al-Baqarah 2:259]
Yes, ... All right, yes, Saleh?
The student:
those who left their homes in many thousands, fearing death? Allah said to them, "Die"; then He restored them to life
[Al-Baqarah 2:243]

The Shaykh : Well done. Saleh?
The student: The man of the cow, meaning the story of the man of the cow.

The Shaykh : There are five stories in this surah in which Allah the Exalted brings the dead back to life in this world.
His saying, the Exalted:
And We shaded you with clouds
[Al-Baqarah 2:57]
What does it mean, Khalifa?
The student:
We shaded you with clouds
[Al-Baqarah 2:57]
The cloud, it was said, is white cloud that is upon them, shading them from the sun and cooling the air.
The Shaykh : Yes, and what does
We shaded you with clouds
[Al-Baqarah 2:57]
mean?
The student: This is a favor from Allah.

The Shaykh : Yes, and what does it mean?
The student: He made the cloud shade them.

The Shaykh : He made the cloud shade them, perfect. For this reason, some of them say that the interpretation of the verse is: "And We shaded you with the cloud," but the correct view is that it is as it is, that the cloud is the object of "We shaded," the meaning being that He made it a shade over them, this is the meaning. His saying:
The honey and the salwa
What is the man, the honey?
The student: I do not know.

The Shaykh : What do you know?
The student: It was said that it is a drink resembling honey.

The Shaykh : Yes.
The student: And the salwa, it was said: it is a bird, it is a bird

The Shaykh : Yes, one of the finest birds and the most delicious, and it is called among us, it is called the saffron bird, the samana, yes, the samana, among us it is called the saffron bird, meaning a yellow bird with tender meat and a good taste.
