Question:
What is the meaning of the verse: (And We shaded you with the cloud and sent down to you the manna and the salwa)?

Answer:
Answer: This concerns the Children of Israel when Allah punished them with the wandering in the wilderness for forty years, causing them to wander in the land. So Allah had mercy on them in this wandering and shaded them with the cloud to shade them from the sun, because they had no buildings or houses. We shaded them with the cloud as a mercy from Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He). (And We sent down to you the manna), which is something resembling honey that descends at night on the trees, and they eat it. (And the salwa), which is the bird that is eaten; it is hunted and eaten. The young bird is mentioned, and it is said to be the bird of the Somali.
