Then Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) began to enumerate His blessings upon them in His saying: [Al-Baqarah 2:57] [Al-Baqarah 2:57] In the noble verse, Allah the Exalted says: Its apparent meaning is that the one providing shade is the cloud, just as you say: “I shaded Zayd with the cloak.” For this reason, some grammarians held that the implied meaning of the noble verse is: “And We shaded you with the cloud.” Are you now saying “I shaded so-and-so,” is he shaded or shaded by it? He is shaded. Here it says: [Al-Baqarah 2:57] But in my view, it does not require an implied meaning, and what fully conveys the meaning is His saying: If He had said: “We shaded the cloud” only, one might suspect that the cloud was shaded. But He said: meaning We made it a shade for you. And that was in the wandering when they wandered, and they remained in the wandering between Egypt and Syria for how long? Forty years, wandering in the land. But Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) had mercy on them. They had no water, no shelter, and nothing, yes? But Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) had mercy on them and shaded them with the cloud. The cloud is the thin white cloud, and it is said to be the cloud in general, yes? And it is said to be the cold cloud that makes the weather cold, from which moisture is generated and the weather cools, and this is the apparent meaning.
[Al-Baqarah 2:57] [Al-Baqarah 2:57] The manna: they say it is something resembling honey that descended upon them between the dawn and the rising of the sun, and when they got up, they ate from it. As for the quail, it is a bird, a tender bird called the quail or similar to it. And our shaykhs told us that it is the lark, a well-known lark, a well-known bird, one of the best of birds and the most delicious, and it is small and bitter. Allah is the Greatest.
