The reciter: Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna narrated to us, Yahya ibn Sa'id narrated to us, Hisham narrated to us, Qatadah narrated to us from Salim ibn Abi al-Ja'd from Ma'dan ibn Abi Talhah that 'Umar ibn al-Khattab delivered a sermon on Friday, mentioning the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and mentioning Abu Bakr, he said:
I saw as if a rooster pecked me three pecks, and I do not see it as anything but the arrival of my term. And some people are urging me to appoint a successor, and Allah will not let His religion, His caliphate, or that with which He sent His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) be lost. If my end comes quickly, then the caliphate is a matter of consultation among these six men, of whom the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was pleased when he passed away. And I know that some people will criticize this matter. I struck them with this hand of mine for Islam. If they do that, then those are the enemies of Allah, the disbelievers, the misguided. Then, I leave behind nothing after me that is more important to me than the inheritance of the kin without direct heirs (kalalah). I never consulted the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about anything as much as I consulted him about the kalalah, and he never was harsh with me about anything as he was about this, until he poked his finger in my chest and said: 'O 'Umar, is not the verse of summer in the end of Surat al-Nisa' sufficient for you?' And if I live, I will judge in it with a judgment by which one who reads the Qur'an and one who does not read the Qur'an will judge. Then he said: 'O Allah, I testify You upon the governors of the provinces, and I only sent them to them to be just with them, to teach the people their religion and the Sunnah of their Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), to distribute their spoils among them, and to refer to me what is difficult for them in their affairs. Then, O people, you eat two plants which I do not see as anything but foul: this is the onion and the garlic. I have seen the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when he found their smell from a man in the mosque, he ordered him to be taken out to al-Baqi'. So whoever eats them, let him cook them thoroughly.
