The reciter: Yahya ibn Ayyub, Qutaybah, and Ibn Hujrah all narrated from Isma'il ibn Ja'far. Ibn Ayyub said: Isma'il narrated to us, saying: Sa'd ibn Sa'id informed me from 'Umar ibn Kathir ibn Aflah from Ibn Sufaynah from Umm Salamah, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: There is no Muslim who is struck by a calamity and says, "What Allah has commanded: We belong to Allah and to Him we return. O Allah, reward me in my calamity and replace it for me with something better," but that Allah will replace it for him with something better. She said: When Abu Salamah died, I said, "Which Muslim is better than Abu Salamah? The first household to emigrate to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." Then I said it, and Allah replaced Abu Salamah for me with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). She said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Hatib ibn Abi Balta'ah to propose me to himself. I said, "I have a daughter, and I am jealous." He said: "As for her daughter, we will call upon Allah to make her independent of her, and I will call upon Allah to remove the jealousy.".
The Shaykh : This is a strange hadith! Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), one of the Mothers of the Believers in the hereafter, had a husband named Abu Salamah, who was her cousin and one of the most beloved people to her. She had heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: There is no Muslim There is no Muslim who is struck by a calamity and says, "What Allah has commanded: We belong to Allah and to Him we return..." etc.
First, there is a point of difficulty here, which is the phrase "what Allah has commanded." We do not find a command to this effect in the Qur'an; rather, it contains:[Al-Baqarah 2:155-156] This is not a command, but rather praise. It is said that the intention behind the praise is the action, that people should do that. Thus, the praise includes the command. Accordingly, we say that the command for something is achieved through its known form, "do it" or "let him do it," and through praising the doer, for praising the doer is an encouragement to do it, so the command for it is implied. And the phrase "We belong to Allah" means in terms of ownership and creation, that He does with us what He wills. And "to Him we return" means in the hereafter, for reward and judgment.
"O Allah, reward me in my calamity": It is also correct to say "Reward me in my calamity and replace it for me with something better." It is not correct to say "and replace," because "replace" (akhla) means to make for me a replacement that is better than it.
"But that Allah will replace it for him with something better." This is how I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say it.
"When Abu Salamah died, I said: Which Muslim is better than Abu Salamah? The first household to emigrate to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." This means that she (may Allah be pleased with her) was thinking about who would be better than Abu Salamah. It did not cross her mind that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would marry her, but due to her trust in the words of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), she said that.
"Then I said it, and Allah replaced Abu Salamah for me with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." There is no doubt that the Messenger of Allah is better than Abu Salamah; there is no issue with this.
She said:Sunan Ibn Majah 755Hasan (Darussalam) This refers to Hatib for the Messenger. Hatib had a story, which is that he became a spy for Quraysh when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to fight them. He sent a slave girl with a letter informing them that the Messenger was coming to fight them. This reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so he sent 'Ali ibn Abi Talib and a man with him to pursue her. They caught up with her at Rawdat Khakh and ordered her to produce the paper she had with her. She denied it, and they said, "No, either you produce it, or we will do this and that," meaning they would search everything on her. She produced it, and it contained: Hatib (may Allah be pleased with him) informed Quraysh of this. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "What is this?" He informed him of his excuse, even though it was not a valid excuse. 'Umar or someone else stood up and said: "Should I not kill him, O Messenger of Allah? He has become a hypocrite, informing the enemies of the Muslims of their news." He said: "As for him, he is from the people of Badr. And what do you know? Perhaps Allah looked upon the people of Badr and said: 'Do what you will, for I have forgiven you.'"
This hadith indicates that Hatib was forgiven for what he did because of this great good deed, the Battle of Badr. It also indicates that a spy is to be killed, even if he is a Muslim, because the Messenger did not say, "He is a Muslim, so I will not kill him," but rather said, "He witnessed Badr." And who among the people witnessed Badr now? No one. So if we find out that someone is a spy for the disbelievers regarding the news of the Muslims, it is obligatory to kill him. Either the ruler kills him if he can catch him, or someone else kills him if the ruler cannot kill him, in whatever place he is.
The important thing is that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) sent him to her
He said: What should I do with her? Meaning this daughter. So he said:
This is one of the greatest matters, that one is saved from jealousy. And no one is safe from jealousy, not even men, and women, and the young and the old; they all have jealousy. If you give a young child something, he protests, gets jealous, and cries out. If he can get something like it, he will, otherwise he goes to the other child and takes it from him. Every person has jealousy; this is a natural matter.
The explanation you have is "to make her independent of her"?
The questioner : No, there isn't, O Shaykh.
The Shaykh : What do you have, O 'Abd Allah?
