The questioner : When it came time to stone the pillars, I was unable to do so because I was pregnant. My father was with me and he stoned on my behalf. Do I owe anything?
The Shaykh : The stoning of the pillars, like the other acts of the pilgrimage, is obligatory for the capable person to perform himself, based on the saying of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He):[Al-Baqarah 2:196] It is not permissible for anyone to be lax in this, as some people do; you find them appointing someone to stone on their behalf, not out of inability to stone, but to avoid the crowd and the harm caused by it. This is a serious error. However, if a person is unable, such as a sick person or a pregnant woman, or something similar, he may appoint someone to stone on his behalf. This woman mentions that she was pregnant, and on this basis, the stoning on her behalf is permissible, her obligation is discharged by it, and there is no blame on her, if Allah wills.
The questioner : May Allah bless you.
The Shaykh : The stoning of the pillars, like the other acts of the pilgrimage, is obligatory for the capable person to perform himself, based on the saying of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He):
And complete the Hajj and 'umrah for Allah
