A person who is consistent with voluntary fasting: should he leave it off while traveling? And should voluntary acts be left off out of fear of showing off?

The questioner : Peace be upon you.
His EminenceThe Shaykh : A person who has the habit of fasting the white days (the 13th, 14th, and 15th of the lunar month), Mondays, and Thursdays, travels to his family on some of these days. Is it permissible for him to continue fasting even while he is traveling?
The second part of the question states: Some of his relatives and family know that he fasts on these days, and he fears that showing off (riya') may affect him in them. Should he leave off fasting on these days?

The Shaykh : Voluntary fasting is like all other voluntary acts: if a person wishes, he may continue with it, and if he wishes, he may leave it off. However, it is not befitting for a person, when he does a deed, not to persist in it, due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to Abdullah ibn Amr or Ibn Umar:
Don’t be like so and so, ‘Abdallah. He used to get up during the night, then abandoned the practice. يا عبد الله لا تكن مثل فلان كان يقوم من الليل فترك قيام الليل
Mishkat al-Masabih 1234
. So I say to the brother: persist. And if you are traveling, look at what is easier for you. If it is easier to fast, fast; and if it is easier to break the fast, break it. As for the fear of showing off, do not worry about it, because Satan frightens a man when he sees him turning to worship, saying, "You are a hypocrite (showing off)." So let him seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan and let him proceed with his work, and let him not be concerned with this.
