In Ramadan, the recitation of the Book of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, increases, but after Ramadan, this Qur'an may be abandoned until the next Ramadan arrives, and it remains on the shelves. What is the ruling?

The questioner : And we are discussing the Book of Allah in this session. May the Shaykh be respected. I say that in Ramadan, the reciters of the Book of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, increase, and this is good, and its virtue is great and immense. But after Ramadan, this Qur'an may be abandoned until the next Ramadan arrives, and it remains on the shelves. What do you advise us and the Muslims regarding this?

The Shaykh : We advise our Muslim brothers, especially the memorizers of the Qur'an, to keep the Qur'an in check through recitation so that they may attain the reward and remain connected to the speech of Allah, Mighty and Majestic. And they should not leave any time of their times without having in it good from speech or action.
And I urge my brothers, the memorizers of the Qur'an, to keep it in check, for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded that, and he said:
Keep refreshing your knowledge of the Qur'an, for I swear by Him in Whose Hand is the life of Mahammad that it is more liable to escape than camels which are hobbled. تعاهدوا القرءان فوالذي نفسي بيده لهو أشد تفلتا من الإبل في عقلها
Sahih Muslim 791
or he said:
break away than a camel in its bind تفصيا من الإبل في عقلها
Sahih al-Bukhari 5033
It is necessary for the memorizers of the Qur'an not to neglect it, for its neglect and turning away from it until it is forgotten may involve a great sin.
And here is a matter I would like to point out, which is that some young people hesitate to memorize the Qur'an.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : And they say, "I do not memorize it because I fear that I will forget it and thus be in a state of sin." This is undoubtedly from the whispers of Satan and his discouragement from good. So, my brother, as long as you are in the time of youth, memorize the Qur'an, keep it in check, seek help from Allah in doing so, and strive to keep it firm in your heart. And if you forget a verse despite your effort, there is absolutely no sin on you. It is established that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed one day, or rather prayed one night, and recited, and he forgot a verse from the Qur'an. So Abu ibn Ka'b reminded him of it after the prayer, and he said:
Why did you not remind me of it?هلا كنت ذكرتنيها
And he passed by a man reciting the Qur'an and said:
May Allah have mercy on so-and-so. He reminded me of a verse that I had forgotten. يرحم الله فلانا لقد ذكّرني ءاية كنت أنسيتها
Sahih Ibn Hibban 3:47
.
So the conclusion is that if a person strives, memorizes the Qur'an, and keeps it in check, and then forgets what he forgets of it, there is no sin on him without doubt. So you, O young man, should seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan, and seek help from Allah, Mighty and Majestic, in memorizing His Book, Glorified and Exalted is He. And you should begin to memorize the Qur'an, and you should guard your times from wasting them without benefit.
And in our lands, praise be to Allah, there are many circles of Qur'an education, for memorization and for reading. So we ask Allah the Exalted to make it encompass all the lands of Islam, and to benefit His believing servants with it.

The questioner : O Allah, amen. May Allah reward you with good, O respected Shaykh.
