Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : When a new baby is born, what is the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding the supplication for him, and how should one treat him?

The Shaykh : It is part of the Sunnah for a newborn that the known adhan is called into his ear. The scholars said: so that the first thing he hears is the call to prayer and the call to success, along with the magnification of Allah and His oneness.
And if it is the seventh day, the head of the male child is shaved and charity is given in the weight of his hair in silver. The 'aqiqah is slaughtered on the seventh day, which is: two sheep for a male child and one sheep for a female child. It is slaughtered on the seventh day, and some of it is eaten and some is distributed as a gift and charity.
As for naming, if the name was prepared before the birth, let the naming be at the time of birth, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) entered upon his family one day and said:
A son was born to me tonight and I named him Ibrahim. ولد لي الليلة ولد وسميته إبراهيم
And if the naming was not prepared, let it be on the seventh day at the time of slaughtering the 'aqiqah. It is recommended for a person to choose a good name for his son and his daughter.
The most beloved names to Allah, I mean the names of males, are 'Abdullah and 'Abd al-Rahman. And likewise, what is worshipped for Allah (Mighty and Majestic), such as: 'Abd al-Karim, 'Abd al-'Aziz, 'Abd al-Rahim, 'Abd al-Wahhab, 'Abd al-Mannan, and the like. Then the names of the Prophets (peace and blessings be upon them), such as: Muhammad, Ibrahim, Musa, 'Isa, Yusuf, and the like. Then the other names that people are accustomed to, as long as they are not sinful.
If it is sinful, such that it is not fitting for humans, or if it is the name of idols, or the names of disbelieving leaders, and the like, then it is not permissible to name with it. And likewise, names that indicate self-praise are not permissible to name with. For this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) changed the name Bara' to Zaynab, because Bara' contains self-praise.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
