Explanation of the Book of the Hearts-02a

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Yahya ibn Yusuf narrated to us: Abu Bakr ibn 'Iyash narrated to us from Abu Husayn from Abu Salih from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Let the slave of Dinar and Dirham of Quantify and Khamisa (i.e. money and luxurious clothes) perish for he is pleased if these things are given to him, and if not, he is displeased! تعس عبد الدينار والدرهم والقطيفة والخميصة إن أُعطي رضي وإن لم يُعط لم يرض
Sahih al-Bukhari 2886

The Shaykh : "Ta'asa" means to be ruined and to lose out. The slave of the dinar, the dirham, the quilt, and the cloak: the dinar and the dirham are well known, but as for the quilt, it is what one sits on, and the cloak is what one wears. A person takes care of his dirhams and dinars, and takes care of his clothing and his seat. Some people take care of these things so that they serve as a means for their obedience, and they display the favor of Allah upon them through them. But some people are occupied with them to the extent that they become slaves to them, as if they were created for them, having no concern other than acquiring the dinar, the dirham, the cloak, and the quilt. It is not meant that a person prostrates to these things, for no one prostrates to dirhams, dinars, quilts, or cloaks. Rather, the meaning is that he is occupied with them to the neglect of the obedience of Allah. He says:
as he is pleased if these things are given to him, and if not, he is displeased إن أُعطي رضي وإن لم يعط سخط
Sahih al-Bukhari 2887
. Who is he pleased with? With the giver, so that when Allah gives to him, he is pleased with Allah, and if he is not given, he is displeased, even with Allah, even at Allah he is displeased. Yes,
And among them are some who criticize you concerning the [distribution of] charities. If they are given from them, they approve; but if they are not given from them, at once they become angry. ومنهم من يلمزك في الصدقات فإن أعطوا منها رضوا وإن لم يعطوا منها إذا هم يسخطون
[At-Tawbah 9:58]
. In this is a warning against these matters, lest you become slaves to them. Rather, be a slave to Allah and use these matters to assist you in the worship of Allah.
