I was walking with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the volcanic area of Madinah when we came upon Mount Uhud. He said: 'O Abu Dharr!' I said: 'At your service, O Messenger of Allah.' He said: 'I would not be pleased to have a mountain like Uhud in gold, and three days pass over me with a single dinar remaining from it, except for what I set aside as a debt, or what I spend among the servants of Allah, like this, and this, on his right, on his left, and behind him.' Then he continued walking and said: 'The most numerous will be the least on the Day of Resurrection, except for one who spends his wealth like this, and this, on his right, on his left, and behind him, and they are few.' Then he said to me: 'Stay in your place and do not move until I come to you.' Then he departed into the darkness of the night until he was out of sight. I heard a voice raised in the air, and I feared that something had happened to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I wanted to go to him, but I remembered his saying: 'Do not move until I come to you,' so I did not move until he came to me. I said: 'I heard a voice that I feared.' I mentioned it to him, and he said: 'Did you hear it?' I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'That was Jibril who came to me and said: "Whoever dies from your Ummah not associating anything with Allah will enter Paradise." I said: "Even if he commits zina and steals?" He said: "Even if he commits zina and steals."'
And from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), who said:
If I had gold equal to the mountain of Uhud, it would not please me that anything of it should remain with me after three nights (i.e., I would spend all of it in Allah's Cause) except what I would keep for repaying debts.
