Explanation of the Book of the Hearts-05b

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Muhammad ibn Bashar narrated to us, saying: Yahya narrated to us from 'Ubayd Allah, who said: Khayyib ibn 'Abd al-Rahman narrated to me from Hafs ibn 'Asim from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said Allah will give shade to seven (types of people) under His Shade (on the Day of Resurrection). (one of them will be) a person who remembers Allah and his eyes are then flooded with tears. سبعة يظلهم الله في ظله رجل ذكر الله ففاضت عيناه
Sahih al-Bukhari 6479
.

The Shaykh : I do not have "in His shade" in my copy; it says "Allah will shade them." Do you have "in His shade"?
The reciter: Yes, Shaykh.

The Shaykh : The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
There are seven whom Allah will shade in His shade on the day on which there is no shade except His shadeسبعة يظلهم الله في ظله يوم لا ظل إلا ظله
Muwatta Malik 51:14
. The mention of "seven" does not imply exclusivity, because authentic hadiths have been reported regarding people whom Allah will shade in His shade who are not among these seven. However, the Messenger (may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him) sometimes mentions limited items in a single context, but this does not indicate that others do not fall under this ruling. For example, "Three people will not be spoken to by Allah on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He look at them, nor purify them, and they will have a painful punishment." Does this mean there are no others besides these three? No. For instance, when this was mentioned, Abu Dharr asked, "Who are they, O Messenger of Allah? They have failed and lost." He said:
the dragger of lower garment, the recounter of obligation the seller of goods by false oath. المسبل والمنان ، والمنفق سلعته بالحلف الكاذب
Sahih Muslim 106a
. This is one hadith. Another hadith says:
Three people will not be spoken to by Allah on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He look at them, nor purify them, and they will have a painful punishment: a gray-haired fornicator, a poor man who is arrogant, and a man who made his trade such that he does not sell except with his oath and does not buy except with his oath
. This is three, and the first one also said three. This indicates that such an expression does not imply exclusivity, and that is the case. As for these seven, they were mentioned in a context of completeness, different from what the author mentioned. An just ruler, a young man who grew up in the obedience of Allah, a man whose heart is attached to the mosques, two men who loved each other for the sake of Allah, meeting and parting for that sake, a man whom a woman of high status and beauty invited, and he said, "I fear Allah," a man who gave charity in secret so that his left hand did not know what his right hand spent, and a man who remembered Allah in seclusion and his eyes overflowed with tears. These seven will be shaded by Allah in His shade. The point of this hadith is what the author mentioned in this context, what al-Bukhari mentioned in this context, which is his saying:
and a person who remembers Allah in seclusion and his eyes are then flooded with tears رجل ذكر الله خالياً ففاضت عيناه
Sahih al-Bukhari 660
. Know that the saying of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) "in His shade" is from the category of attributing the created to its Creator. That is, it is a shade that Allah creates, not one built by humans with roofs, canopies, or the like. In this world, people build things to shade them, but in the Hereafter, there is no shade except the shade of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). What He created is a created shade, not the shade of the Creator (Mighty and Majestic). Some people, out of their insistence on the apparent meaning of the Sunnah regarding what Allah attributes to Himself, have claimed that if we say it is a created shade, that would be distorting the word from its place. But this is due to their ignorance. This is because a shade must be under the thing it shades; shades are below the object. It must be beneath it, otherwise it would not be a shade. And is it possible for there to be something with light above Allah (Mighty and Majestic) such that Allah (the Exalted) is shaded from it? Or is it not possible?
The reciter: It is not possible.

The Shaykh : It is absolutely not possible. If anyone said this, he would fall into the abyss, becoming like one who denies the elevation of Allah. It is not possible for anything to be above Allah (Mighty and Majestic), and it is known that people will be gathered on the earth. If it were assumed that this is the shade of Allah Himself, it would necessitate that there is something above Him, with Allah (the Exalted) being a shade beneath it and beneath the creation. This is undoubtedly a deniable meaning. The hadith does not indicate this at all, so it cannot be said to be distorted from its place. We say "in His shade" because Allah attributed it to Himself, because at that time, no one can bring shades. In this world, we can build structures to take shade, along with the shades Allah (the Exalted) created, such as caves and others. But in the Hereafter, there is only the shade, the shade of Allah, which He created, either the shade of the Throne or something else that provides shade. Therefore, it came in the hadith:
Everybody will be shaded by his Sadaqah (on the Day of Judgment) كل امرئ في ظل صدقته يوم القيامة
Bulugh al-Maram 4:34
. Charities will come on the Day of Resurrection to shade their owner. Some of the elderly people told us about a man who had prevented his family from giving charity from his wealth, saying, "Do not give charity with anything, and you are in a difficult situation with me." But the family in the house was noble; when a needy person came, they gave to him. When a needy person came, they gave to him. Then a poor man in need of clothing came, and they gave him a garment. Then another poor man in need of food came, and they gave him only three dates. The owner of the house saw in a dream that the Resurrection had occurred, and people were in distress and heat. He saw a cloth on his head shading him, except that it had three holes. The three dates came and filled these holes. He came to his family in a panic and said, "I saw such and such and such. What is the result?" They said, "Nothing happened." He said, "No, you must tell me." So they told him that this was the result: they gave a garment in charity, then they gave dates in charity. He said to them, "You are free to give whatever you wish. Allahu Akbar. It became the opener of good for him." Yes, so the result is that the Messenger informed that every person will be in the shade of his charity on the Day of Resurrection. The shade about which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said "in His shade" is a shade that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) creates. If the hadith is authentic with the wording "Allah will shade them in the shade of His Throne," then this clarifies the ambiguous point. If it is not authentic, we say this is a shade that Allah creates, and Allah knows it best. Yes.
The reciter: Shaykh, here it says in the Sunan of Sa'id ibn al-Mansur, "in the shade of the Throne."

The Shaykh : In the shade of His Throne. Well, if it is authentic, praise be to Allah.
