A reading from the commentary that includes the death of 'Umar and the caliphate of 'Uthman

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reader:
And he was standing, praying in the mihrab the Fajr prayer on Wednesday, with four days remaining in Dhu al-Hijjah of this year, with a double-edged dagger, and he died (may Allah be pleased with him) after three days, and was buried on Sunday at the beginning of Muharram.

The Shaykh : On Wednesday, which day was it?
The reader: He will speak now.

The Shaykh : Yes.
The reader: "And he was buried on Sunday, at the beginning of Muharram in the year twenty-four, in the Prophet's chamber, next to al-Siddiq, with the permission of the Mother of the Believers, 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her). On that day, the Commander of the Faithful, 'Uthman ibn 'Affan (may Allah be pleased with him), ruled. Al-Waqidi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Abu Bakr ibn Isma'il ibn Muhammad ibn Sa'd narrated to me from his father, who said: 'Umar was stabbed on Wednesday, with four nights remaining in Dhu al-Hijjah of the year twenty-three, and he was buried on Sunday morning, at the new moon of Muharram in the year twenty-four. His rule lasted ten years, five months, and twenty-one days. 'Uthman was pledged allegiance to on Monday, with three days having passed in Muharram. He said: I mentioned this to al-Akhnas, and he said: I think you have erred. 'Umar passed away with four nights remaining in Dhu al-Hijjah, and 'Uthman was pledged allegiance to with one night remaining in Dhu al-Hijjah, so he began his caliphate in Muharram of the year twenty-four.
And Abu Mash'ir said: 'Umar was killed with four days remaining in Dhu al-Hijjah, completing the year twenty-three, and his caliphate lasted ten years, six months, and four days, and 'Uthman ibn 'Affan was pledged allegiance to. And Ibn Jarir said: I was narrated from Hisham ibn Muhammad, who said: 'Umar was killed with three days remaining in Dhu al-Hijjah of the year twenty-three, so his caliphate lasted ten years, six months, and four days. And Sa'if said, from Khalid ibn Furwa and Majdald, who both said: 'Uthman was appointed caliph with three days in Muharram, so he went out and led the people in the 'Asr prayer. And 'Ali ibn Muhammad al-Mada'ini said, from Shurayk, from al-A'mash or Jabir al-Ju'fi, from Awf ibn Malik al-Ashja'i, and 'Amir ibn Muhammad said, from the elders of his tribe, and 'Uthman ibn 'Abd al-Rahman said, from al-Zuhri: 'Umar was stabbed on Wednesday, with seven days remaining in Dhu al-Hijjah. The first opinion is the most famous, and Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) knows best. "

The Shaykh : It appears that the last opinion, that it was at the end of the month of Dhu al-Hijjah, is closer to the truth, because 'Umar arrived in Madinah and delivered a sermon on Friday, and this means that he arrived early, and that his killing was delayed. Yes, you have done well, may Allah reward you.

The questioner : Is the truth with three, or with four, or with seven days remaining in Dhu al-Hijjah?

The Shaykh : No, no, with three or four. With seven, that is far-fetched.

The questioner : But does it agree with the statement of 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Awf?

The Shaykh : Yes, it agrees.
The reader: The rest of the hadith, O Shaykh.

The Shaykh : The rest of the hadith, look at his statement: "I am its well-trimmed root", this metaphor?
The reader: He says here: "Its well-trimmed root is a stick set up in the enclosure for scabby camels to rub against, meaning I am one whose opinion is sought for healing, just as scabby camels seek healing by rubbing against it. Its tall, resinous branch is the large cluster of the date palm, and the cluster is the branch, and the meaning is that I am a shrewd, knowledgeable person in matters."

The Shaykh : You have done well. Do you have anything else?
