The questioner : Many people in our village swear oaths using the following phrases: "By my life, O my Lord," "By my father's life," "By my father's head," and other such phrases. Please inform us about this, may you be rewarded.

The Shaykh : Swearing by other than Allah the Exalted is shirk (associating partners with Allah). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He who swears by anyone or anything other than Allah, has indeed committed an act of Kufr or Shirk من حلف بغير الله فقد كفر أو أشرك
Riyad as-Salihin 1711
.
As for swearing by "the life of Allah," it should be replaced by saying "By the life of Allah," for it is permissible to swear by the life of Allah, by the hearing of Allah, by His sight, His power, His might, His wisdom, and all His attributes. Thus, one swears by the names of Allah and His attributes, and by nothing else.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.
