Explanation of the Book of Fitnahs and Rulings-02b

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Muhammad ibn Kathir narrated to us, Sufyan informed us, al-A'mash narrated to us from Zayd ibn Wahb, who narrated to us from Hudhayfah, who said:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) narrated to us two hadiths. I witnessed the first one, and I am awaiting the second. He narrated to us: "Trustworthiness was sent down to the roots of men's hearts, then they learned from the Qur'an, then they learned from the Sunnah."
And he narrated to us about its lifting, saying:
Man will go to sleep during which honesty will be taken away from his heart and only its trace will remain in his heart like the trace of a dark spot; then man will go to sleep, during which honesty will decrease further still, so that its trace will resemble the trace of blister as when an ember is dropped on one's foot which would make it swell, and one would see it swollen but there would be nothing inside. People would be carrying out their trade but hardly will there be a trustworthy person. It will be said, 'in such-and-such tribe there is an honest man,' and later it will be said about some man, 'What a wise, polite and strong man he is!' Though he will not have faith equal even to a mustard seed in his heart." No doubt, there came upon me a time when I did not mind dealing (bargaining) with anyone of you, for if he was a Muslim his Islam would compel him to pay me what is due to me, and if he was a Christian, the Muslim official would compel him to pay me what is due to me, but today I do not deal except with such-and-such person.
Sahih al-Bukhari 7086
.

The Shaykh : Yes, this hadith contains a warning about what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned regarding the lifting of trustworthiness, and also regarding the lifting of faith. He says:
The man would have a wink of sleep and trustworthiness would be taken away from his heart
Sahih Muslim 143a
May Allah protect us from that. A man wakes up with no trustworthiness, but a trace remains. Then he sleeps, and a trace remains, but it is a trace with no real effect, like a coal that rolls over a foot; it swells, but there is nothing in it. This applies to trustworthiness as it does to faith. Therefore, you may find that sometimes your heart has such faith that it seems to witness the unseen with its own eyes, and sometimes this light goes out, and you do not find this certainty in yourself. At that time, a person must turn to his Lord (Mighty and Majestic) by asking for steadfastness, and he should remember the verses of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) that strengthen his faith, because the matter is serious. If the heart rusts with this vile rust, it is worse than cancer in the body if you do not hasten to remove it and treat it. It is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
There is no heart among the hearts of the children of Adam but that it is between two fingers of the fingers of the Most Merciful, and He turns it as He wills
Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said himself:
O Allah, O Turner of hearts, make our hearts steadfast upon Your religion.
Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 42:68
The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said this, so what about us? Therefore, in this context, I call upon you to monitor and follow up on your hearts, for that is harder than following up on the limbs. Following up on the limbs invalidates the prayer and requires repeating it with a new prayer, for example, if you leave an obligatory part of Hajj, you compensate with a sacrifice. But the hearts are the problem. We ask Allah for faith and steadfastness for you and for us. A person must observe this so that trustworthiness is not taken from his heart and faith is not taken from his heart. Rather, he should always observe and ask Allah for steadfastness, and perform righteous deeds, for righteous deeds are like watering a tree. If a tree’s basin dries up of water, it withers and its leaves begin to fall. But if water is brought to it and it is watered, its greenness returns and it revives. So righteous deeds are in the position of watering trees for plants. So do this if you see lethargy or weakness in your heart; strengthen it with righteous deeds. Then he (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
No doubt, there came upon me a time when I did not mind dealing (bargaining) with anyone of you, for if he was a Muslim his Islam would compel him to pay me what is due to me, and if he was a Christian, the Muslim official would compel him to pay me what is due to me
Sahih al-Bukhari 7086
The meaning of "trading" here is buying and selling. He means to say, "At first, I did not care if I traded with Zayd or 'Amr, whether he was a Muslim or a Christian, because the Muslim would return it to me by his Islam, and he could not deny me anything or harm me. But as for the Christian, his agent would return it to me. The agents were those who checked on the Christians in the early days of Islam when Islam was strong. But
but today I do not deal except with such-and-such person.
Sahih al-Bukhari 7086
Do I trade in the sense of a pledge of allegiance or buying and selling? Buying and selling. I would not trade with anyone except so-and-so and so-and-so, because they are trustworthy. So now, in the time of Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman, the trustworthy ones are only so-and-so and so-and-so from the town. How many centuries have passed since then? How has it become like this now? Now it is worse and greater. We ask Allah to make us and you steadfast.
