Explanation of the words of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding what he quoted: "

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) said, in what he quoted from Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said:
He told us حدثنا
Hudhayfah says,
with two hadiths; I have seen one of them, and I am waiting for the other
and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would sometimes tell his Companions what he saw as appropriate. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told someone something, it was a hadith for him and for the Ummah until the Day of Resurrection. Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him) is called the Keeper of the Secret. He is called the Keeper of the Secret because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told him about a group of hypocrites whom the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) knew, and Hudhayfah informed about them. They were about thirteen men, and he named them by their names. And 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), out of his intense fear of Allah, would meet with Hudhayfah and say:
I ask you by Allah, did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) name me to you among those he named from the hypocrites?
This is 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), who is the best of this Ummah after its Prophet and Abu Bakr, meaning he is the second after the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) in this Ummah. He has a degree of certainty and great stations that are well known, to the extent that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
If there are among you any inspired with the truth, it is 'Umar
He praises him and speaks well of him for his agreement with the truth and his faith. His (may Allah be pleased with him) faith is well known and famous. He says:
I invoke Allah upon you, did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) name you among the hypocrites whom he named? He would say: No.
Hudhayfah says this, and no one will testify to your character after you. Then he (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told him about the removal of trust from the hearts of men. That Allah placed trust in the roots of men's hearts, meaning in their essence.
Then He sent down upon them from the Qur'an and the Sunnah.
What confirms this essence and supports this essence is that the Qur'an and the Sunnah came as support for the fitrah upon which Allah created people. They learned from the Book of Allah and from the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and thereby their faith, steadfastness, and fulfillment of trust increased. But he informed in the second hadith that this trust is removed from the hearts of men, refuge with Allah, and it is removed so that people will talk.
in such-and-such tribe there is an honest man
Sahih al-Bukhari 7086
Meaning that you hardly find in a tribe except one trustworthy man, and the rest are all in a state of betrayal, not fulfilling trust. And indeed, people today have witnessed the truth of this hadith from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), for you can review people one by one until you reach a hundred or hundreds, and you will not find the trustworthy man who fulfills trust as it should be, neither in the right of Allah nor in the rights of people. You may find a man who is trustworthy in the right of Allah: he performs the prayer, pays the zakah, fasts, performs Hajj, remembers Allah a lot, and glorifies Him. But he is not trustworthy in money; he is not trustworthy in money. If he is entrusted with an official government job, he is negligent and does not come to work except late, and he leaves before the time ends, and he wastes many days on his personal affairs, and he does not care, even though he is among the foremost people in the mosques, in charity, in fasting, and in Hajj. But he is not trustworthy in another aspect. Likewise, you find a man who is trustworthy in the worship of Allah: he establishes the prayer, gives the zakah, fasts, performs Hajj, and gives charity, but he is not trustworthy in his job. He knows that it is not permissible for an employee to trade or open a commercial shop, but he does not care; he opens a commercial shop, either explicitly in his own name, or under a pseudonym, or through a foreign man whom he places in this shop, or something similar. He lies and betrays the state and eats money by falsehood. And this money that he eats is from forbidden earnings, which is a barrier to the acceptance of his supplication, refuge with Allah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Indeed, Allah is Pure and accepts nothing but that which is pure. And Allah commanded the believers with what He commanded the messengers, saying: O you who believe, eat from the good things We have provided for you and be grateful to Allah if it is Him you worship. And He said: O messengers, eat from the good things and do righteous deeds; indeed, I am Knowing of what you do. Then he mentioned the man who travels a long distance, disheveled and covered in dust, stretching his hands toward the sky: O my Lord, O my Lord, while his food is forbidden, his drink is forbidden, and he is nourished with that which is forbidden. How then will he be answered?
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
How will it be accepted
It is far-fetched that Allah would respond to this man who is disheveled and dusty, stretching his hands to the sky, saying: O Lord, O Lord. And yet, it is far-fetched that Allah would respond to him because he eats what is forbidden. This is the one who is an employee by virtue of an employment contract that prohibits him from engaging in trade, yet he engages in trade. All his earnings from this trade are forbidden, forbidden to him, a corrupt gain, refuge with Allah. And he does not care. We say to such a person: You are now at a choice. If you wish to remain in the job, leave the trade. And if you see that trade is more suitable for you and more beneficial, leave the job. Two things do not come together according to the covenant between you and the state. You know that the state prohibits engaging in trade, so why do you trade? Allah the Exalted said:
O you who have believed, fulfill [all] contracts.
[Al-Ma'idah 5:1]
And He said:
And fulfill [every] commitment. Indeed, the commitment is ever [that about which one will be] questioned.
[Al-Isra 17:34]
Some people make excuses, saying: "Well, how can you prevent me from trading when there are ministers who trade? They trade in lands, they trade in other things, large companies." We say: If the people go astray, their going astray is not guidance. If they are astray and oppressive in what they do, do not you go astray and do not you be oppressive. So if, for example, he says: "These regulations came from before them or from under their hands; they are the ones who legislated them, so how do they contradict them?" We say: Well, their reckoning is with Allah. Their reckoning with Allah will be that they will be the first to grieve and regret what they did on the Day of Resurrection, on a day when they will have no money to ransom themselves, nor servants, nor gatekeepers, nor anything else. It does not concern you, as long as it has been legislated for you, or as long as you have contracted that you will not engage in trade, do not engage in it, and do not make excuses by the actions of those who have contradicted this. We ask Allah for guidance for us and for you, and that He make us and you among the trustworthy ones who fulfill trust in the right of Allah and the rights of His servants.
