The reciter: Isma'il ibn Mansur narrated to us, 'Abd al-Samad narrated to us, Shu'bah narrated to us, Thabit al-Bunani narrated from Anas ibn Malik:
He said to a woman from among his family: "Do you know so-and-so?" She said: "Yes." He said: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by her while she was weeping at a grave, and he said: 'Fear Allah and be patient.'" She said: "Leave me alone, for you are far removed from my grief." He said: "So he passed by her and went on. Then a man passed by her and said: 'What did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say to you?'" She said: "I did not recognize him." He said: "He is indeed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." She said: "So she came to his door and found no doorman. She said: 'O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, I did not recognize you.'" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Patience is at the first shock."
.

The Shaykh : The point of this is that the woman came to the house of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), and there was no doorman at his house, but no one enters him without seeking permission. Seeking permission is necessary. As for the doorman, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not have a doorman at his house, but if a person fears for his safety, there is no harm in appointing a guard or doorman for his protection. In this hadith, there is evidence that if a person does something, he should be admonished with this admonition, and it should be said to him: "Fear Allah and be patient." It also contains evidence for the permissibility of women visiting graves, because this woman was at the grave of her child, as some scholars have claimed. However, the correct view is that there is no evidence in it for this, because the woman, due to the severity of the calamity that befell her, could not control herself and came to this grave. Rather, it contains evidence that women should be prevented from visiting graves, because a woman does not have patience. This woman was weeping at this grave because she was afflicted by it. The correct view is that there is no indication in it for the permissibility of a woman visiting a grave. However, as we mentioned previously, if she passes by a grave and stops there, sends peace, and makes du'a, there is no harm. What is prohibited is that she goes out of her house for the purpose of visiting, for this is not permissible. It also contains evidence that a person may not recognize someone, even if he is famous and well-known, for this woman did not recognize the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). It also contains the fact that patience is at the first shock, meaning the first shock of the trial. This is because if a person is afflicted with a calamity and then time passes, it cools down for him and patience becomes easier for him. But at the first shock, he is the one who weakens in bearing it. For this reason, we say that if a man is patient at the first shock, then he is the patient one. But if it is delayed, then his patience is weak, even if he has patience. However, true patience is patience at the first shock. And on this basis, his saying:
No doubt, patience is at the first stroke of a calamity. إن الصبر عند أول الصدمة
Sahih al-Bukhari 7154
does not mean that a person does not attain anything of patience after that, but he attains it according to his capacity, except that it is weak.
