The Shaykh : Chapter on patience in the face of calamity at the first shock. This contains the hadith of Anas ibn Malik,
Anas b. Malik reported that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) came to a woman who had been weeping for her (dead) child, and said to her: Fear Allah and show endurance. She (not recognising him) said: You have not been afflicted as I have been. When he (the Holy Prophet) had departed, it was said to her that he was the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), she was mortally shocked. She came to his door and she did not find doorkeepers at his door. She said: Messenger of Allah. I did not recognise you. He said: Endurance is to be shown at first blow, or at the first blow.

In this hadith is evidence that a person is only considered patient and strong at the first shock. As for after it has subsided, one is not praised for that, but there is no doubt that he is patient. This is because some people continue to be sad for two or three days, and it remains after the first shock, while others are cut off after the first shock. The determined and resolute one is the one who is patient at the first shock. So his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): "Patience is only..." means: complete patience; the intended meaning is complete patience at the first shock. This occurs often: that the restriction is for perfection, not for the existence of the original, like the saying of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him):
The poor person is not the one whom you turn away with a mouthful or two, or a date or two, but rather the poor person is the one who is modest and does not ask people.
or this is its meaning. So here he said: "Patience is only," meaning, what is patience except such-and-such; the intended meaning is complete patience. Otherwise, a person is patient whenever he remembers the calamity, is patient, and restrains himself from despair, then he is patient.
