Is it valid to combine the Friday prayer with the 'Asr prayer in the city and while traveling?
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : May Allah reward you: Is it valid to combine the Friday prayer with the 'Asr prayer, whether in the city or while traveling?
The Shaykh : First: In the city, this may occur. A person may be ill, attend the Friday prayer, and find it difficult to pray the 'Asr prayer at its proper time, so he combines them. As for traveling, this is also possible. If a traveler passes through a town where the Friday prayer is being held and prays the Friday prayer with them, does he combine or not?
As for the travel in which a person is constantly on the move, there is no Friday prayer in that, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) traveled and did not establish the Friday prayer during his travels. Even at 'Arafah, when he encountered a Friday, he did not establish the Friday prayer (peace and blessings be upon him). However, it is not valid to combine the 'Asr prayer with the Friday prayer, because the Sunnah was only transmitted regarding combining the 'Asr prayer with the Dhuhr prayer. The Friday prayer is not the Dhuhr prayer, as is clear, for it differs from the Dhuhr prayer in more than twenty aspects. If that is the case, it is considered a separate, independent prayer in itself, like the Fajr prayer, to which no other prayer is combined. Therefore, it is not permissible for a person to combine the 'Asr prayer with the Friday prayer, even if he is among those for whom combining is permissible. As for one for whom combining is not permissible, it is clear that he does not combine, not even with the Dhuhr.
