Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted, "Indeed, your Lord is ever watchful," to His saying, "And you love wealth with extreme love," from Surat al-Fajr.

The Shaykh : This is the sixty-fifth session of the weekly gathering that takes place every Thursday, and this is the thirteenth day of the month of Safar, in the year 1415.
Our session today will be on the remainder, or the exegesis, of verses from Surat al-Fajr, where we stopped at the saying of Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He:[Al-Fajr 89:13].
Allah the Exalted said:[Al-Fajr 89:14] The address here is to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) or to everyone to whom the address is directed. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, makes it clear that He is ever watchful over everyone who transgresses, encroaches, and is arrogant; He is watchful over them, and He will punish them and hold them accountable. This meaning has parallels in the Noble Qur'an, including His saying, Blessed and Exalted is He: [Muhammad 47:10] And the saying of Shu'ayb to his people: [Hud 11:89] So the Sunnah of Allah, Exalted is He, is one regarding those who deny His messengers and are arrogant about worshipping Him; He is ever watchful over them. This verse implies a threat and warning to whoever attempts to do so, or whoever is arrogant about worshipping Allah, or denies His news.
Then Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said:[Al-Fajr 89:15-16] The trial from Allah, Mighty and Majestic, comes through good and through evil, as He said: [Al-Anbya 21:35] So a person is tested with good so that Allah, Mighty and Majestic, may test whether he is grateful or ungrateful? And he is tested with evil so that He may test whether he is patient or transgresses? And the conditions of a person, as you all know, revolve between good and evil, between good that suits him and eases his affairs, and evil that does not suit him and does not ease his affairs, and all of it is a trial from Allah.
Man, by his human nature built upon injustice and ignorance, if his Lord tests him by honoring him and blessing him, says: "My Lord has honored me," meaning: that I am worthy of honor, and he does not acknowledge the favor of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, upon him. This is like His saying, the Exalted:[Al-Qasas 28:78] When he was mentioned regarding the blessing of Allah upon him [Al-Qasas 28:78] and he did not acknowledge the favor of Allah. How many people are in this state; when Allah, Mighty and Majestic, honors them and blesses them, they say: "This is an honor from Allah to us because we are worthy of it." If a person were to say: "Allah has honored me with such-and-such," acknowledging His favor and speaking of His blessing, there would be no harm in that for him. But if he says: "I was honored," meaning: that I am worthy of honor, as, for example, a leader of the people might say if he were a guest at someone's home: "So-and-so honored me because I am worthy of it."
[Al-Fajr 89:16] Meaning: He restricted his provision [Al-Fajr 89:16] Meaning: He says: "Allah the Exalted has wronged me, humiliated me, and did not provide for me as He provided for so-and-so, and did not honor me as He honored so-and-so." So in times of ease, he does not give thanks; he is proud of himself and says: "This is my right." And in times of hardship, he does not have patience; rather, he complains to his Lord and says: "My Lord has humiliated me." This is the state of man as a human being. But the believer is not like that. The believer, if Allah honors him and blesses him, gives thanks to his Lord for it and sees that it is a favor from Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and a kindness, not an honor given to its recipient as something he is entitled to. And if Allah, Mighty and Majestic, tests him and restricts his provision, he has patience and seeks reward, and says: "This is because of my sins, and my Lord, Mighty and Majestic, has not humiliated me nor wronged me." So he is patient in times of trial and grateful in times of ease.
In these two verses, there is an indication that it is obligatory for a person to reflect and say, for example: "Why did Allah give me wealth? What does He want from me? He wants me to be grateful. Why did Allah test me with poverty, illness, and the like? He wants me to be patient." So let him be an accountant of his own self so that he does not end up in the state of the human being built upon ignorance and injustice.
Therefore, He said, the Exalted: Meaning: He did not give you what He gave you as an honor to you because you are entitled to it, but it is a favor from Him. And He did not humiliate you when He restricted your provision; rather, this is the requirement of His wisdom and justice.
Then He said, the Exalted:[Al-Fajr 89:17] Meaning: When Allah, Mighty and Majestic, honors you with blessings, you do not show compassion to those who are entitled to honor, and they are orphans. Here, "orphan" is a generic term; it does not mean a single orphan, but the category of orphans. The scholars said that an orphan is one whose father died before he reached puberty, whether male or female. As for one whose mother died, he is not an orphan. And His saying: [Al-Fajr 89:17] And His saying, the Exalted, "the orphan" includes the poor among orphans and the rich, meaning: even the rich among orphans should be treated with kindness and honored, because his heart is broken by the loss of his father and the one who manages his affairs. So Allah, the Exalted, commanded kindness to him until this brokenness that afflicted him is removed.
[Al-Fajr 89:18] And if he does not encourage others, he also does not do it himself; so he does not feed the poor, nor does he encourage feeding the poor. In this, there is an indication that it is recommended for us to honor orphans and to encourage one another to feed the poor, because they are in need. And Allah, the Exalted, is with the servant as long as the servant is with his brother.
[Al-Fajr 89:19-20] The wealth that Allah bequeaths to a servant, whether he inherited it from a deceased person, or bought and sold and earned it, or went out to the open land and brought back what he brings from grass, firewood, and the like. The important thing is that the bequest is the wealth that Allah bequeaths to a person, and the children of Adam devour it greedily.
As for wealth, He said:[Al-Fajr 89:20] Meaning: greatly. And this is the nature of man. But faith has its effects; a person may, by his faith, not care about wealth. If it comes to him, he thanks Allah for it and pays what is obligatory in it, and if it goes, he does not care about it. But the nature of man, in itself, is as Allah, Mighty and Majestic, described it in these two verses.
We ask Allah the Exalted to guide us and you to what is good and righteous, and to protect us from the evil of our own selves, for He is capable of all things. Now we begin with questions from the right; each person has one question, and there is no comment on the question, based on the fact that the answer is sufficient, so no comment, yes.
Our session today will be on the remainder, or the exegesis, of verses from Surat al-Fajr, where we stopped at the saying of Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He:
So your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment.
Allah the Exalted said:
Indeed, your Lord is in observation.
Have they not traveled through the land and seen how was the end of those before them? Allah destroyed [everything] over them, and for the disbelievers is something comparable.
أَفَلَمْ يَسِيرُوا فِي الْأَرْضِ فَيَنْظُرُوا كَيْفَ كَانَ عَاقِبَةُ الَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ دَمَّرَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلِلْكَافِرِينَ أَمْثَالُهَاcause you to be struck by that similar to what struck the people of Noah or the people of Hud or the people of Salih. And the people of Lot are not from you far away.
Then Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said:
(15) And as for man, when his Lord tries him and [thus] is generous to him and favors him, he says, "My Lord has honored me." (16) But when He tries him and restricts his provision, he says, "My Lord has humiliated me."
And We test you with evil and with good as trial

He said, "I was only given it because of knowledge I have."

So let him be an accountant of his own self so that he does not end up in the state of the human being built upon ignorance and injustice.
Therefore, He said, the Exalted:
Nay!
Then He said, the Exalted:
But you do not honor the orphan
But you do not honor the orphan
And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor.
(19) And you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether, (20) And you love wealth with immense love.
