The reciter: And Yahya ibn Yahya narrated to us, saying:

I read to Malik from Nafi' from Abdullah ibn 'Umar: that he described the voluntary prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: He would not pray after the Friday prayer until he had left, then he would pray two rak'ahs in his house. Yahya said: I think I read "he would pray" or "absolutely not." The Shaykh: These are hadiths regarding the prayer after Friday. First, we must know that Friday does not have a regular voluntary prayer (sunnah rawatib) before it. Rather, if a person arrives before the imam comes, he prays whatever Allah wills, without a limit, until the time of prohibition before the sun reaches its zenith, then he stops. Some scholars permitted, specifically on Friday, for a person to pray from the time he arrives until the imam is present. However, the first opinion is preferable, meaning he prays until the time of prohibition arrives, due to the generality of the evidence. This is regarding before Friday. As for after it, the hadiths include both verbal and practical reports. As for the practical ones: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would pray two rak'ahs after Friday in his house, and it is not reported from him that he prayed it in the mosque. And he said: "When one of you prays Friday, or whoever intends to pray, let him pray four rak'ahs after it." Here, it appears there is a conflict between the statement and the action. Because if we look at his statement "let him pray four rak'ahs after it," we find that it is general for both the house and the mosque. And if we look at his action, he only prays two rak'ahs. So do we take the statement and leave the action, and say that his statement is preferred over his action? Or do we take both and say: Pray six: four based on the statement and two based on the action? Or what? The scholars (may Allah have mercy on them) differed in this issue. Some said: The minimum of the sunnah after Friday is two rak'ahs, taking the action, and the maximum is six, combining the statement and the action. Some said: We take the statement, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Let him pray four rak'ahs after it," and he did not distinguish between praying it in the mosque or in his house. So we pray four rak'ahs as we were commanded. And some detailed the issue, like Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him). He said: "As for the command of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), his intention is: If he prays that in the mosque. And as for if he prays in his house, let him pray two rak'ahs." Because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) does not command an order and contradict it without an apparent reason. And as for his passing by praying four rak'ahs after Friday, it is so that the one who thinks does not assume that if he prays only two rak'ahs, those two rak'ahs are a completion of the Friday prayer to make it four rak'ahs like the Dhuhr prayer. For this reason, the person is commanded not to connect the two rak'ahs to the Friday prayer, so that it is not assumed that they are a completion. And what appears to me, and Allah knows best, is that the statement that one should pray four rak'ahs, whether in the house or in the mosque, is preferable, taking the command of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that "he should pray four rak'ahs after it." And if he restricts himself to two rak'ahs sometimes, following the practical sunnah, there is no harm. Meaning, he achieves both this and that.
