The reciter: He said -may Allah have mercy on him-: "Chapter on the Sunnah of the Friday Prayer:
It is narrated from Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both):Jami` at-Tirmidhi 432Sahih (Darussalam) Agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim.
And it is narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih Muslim 881a Narrated by Muslim.
And it is narrated from Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both):Riyad as-Salihin 1127 Narrated by Muslim".
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
The author al-Nawawi -may Allah have mercy on him- said in his book *Riyad al-Salihin*: "Chapter on the Sunnah of the Friday Prayer": The Friday prayer is an independent prayer; it is not the midday prayer. For this reason, the afternoon prayer is not combined with it. That is to say, if you are a traveler and you pass through a town and pray the Friday prayer with them, you do not combine the afternoon prayer with it, because it is independent. The Sunnah only came regarding combining the midday and afternoon prayers, not the Friday and afternoon prayers. Also, the Friday prayer differs from the other prayers by what is prescribed before it, what is prescribed after it, and what is prescribed on its day.
It has no Sunnah before it, meaning it has no regular voluntary prayer. When a person comes to the mosque, he prays as much as he wishes until the imam arrives, without a specific number. He sometimes prays and sometimes recites until the imam arrives, whether he prays two units, four units, six units, or eight units, according to his energy.
As for after it, it has a regular voluntary prayer. The regular voluntary prayer after it is two units in the house, based on the statement of Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both):.
And in the hadith of Abu Hurayrah mentioned by the author: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:Sahih Muslim 881a:
The scholars -may Allah have mercy on them- differed on whether the Sunnah of the Friday prayer is four units, meaning with two salams, or two units?
Some of them said: It is four units, because this is what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded. As for the two units, they are his action, and his command takes precedence over his action, so it is four units.
Some of them said: It is only two units, because this is what Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) mentioned, and the four units are not a regular voluntary prayer.
Some of them distinguished and said: If one prays the Sunnah of the Friday prayer in the mosque, he prays four units, and if he prays in the house, he prays two units. This is the choice of Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah -may Allah have mercy on him-: that if you perform the Sunnah for the Friday prayer in the house, the Sunnah is two units, and if you perform it in the mosque, the Sunnah is four units.
Some of them said: One combines this and that, so he prays four units by the command of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) and prays two units by his action, so the Sunnah after the Friday prayer is six units. And success is from Allah.
The student: May Allah reward you. Regarding what is better, is the Sunnah in the mosque or the Sunnah in the house?
The Shaykh : The Sunnah in the house is better.
It is narrated from Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both):
I prayed two Rak'ah after Al-Maghrib with the Prophet (S) in his house.
أنه صلى مع النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم ركعتين بعد الجمعةAnd it is narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
When any one of you observes the Jumu'a prayer (two obligatory rak'ahs in congregation), he should observe four (rak'ahs) afterwards.
إذا صلى أحدكم الجمعة فليصل بعدها أربعًاAnd it is narrated from Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both):
The Prophet (ﷺ) would not perform any Salat (in the mosque) after the Friday prayer till he had returned to his house. He would then perform two Rak'ah there.
