The Book of Hajj-05a

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Yahya ibn Ayyub narrated to me, saying: 'Abbad ibn 'Abbad al-Muhallabi narrated to us, saying: 'Ubayd Allah ibn 'Umar narrated to us, from al-Qasim ibn Muhammad, from the Mother of the Believers, 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), who said:
Some among us put on Ihram for Hajj alone (Hajj Mufrad) ; some of us for Hajj and Umra together (Qiran), and some of us for Tamattal (first for Umra and after completing it for Hajj). منّا من أهلّ بالحجّ مفردًا ، ومنّا من قرن ، ومنّا من تمتّع
Sahih Muslim 1211n
.

The Shaykh : This is evidence that the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) distinguished between tamattu' and qiran. This is a matter of no doubt when both are present together; if one performs tamattu' and another performs qiran, there is no doubt that there is a difference between them. However, if it is said "tamattu'" only, some of the scholars said that tamattu' in the language of the Companions means combining 'Umrah and Hajj in one journey, whether there is a state of ihram release between them or not.
