The Book of Hajj-08b

The Reciter: And Muhammad ibn Rumh narrated to us, saying: Al-Layth informed us. And Qutaybah narrated to us, and the wording is his, saying: Al-Layth narrated to us from Nafi':

That Ibn 'Umar intended to perform Hajj in the year al-Hajjaj descended upon Ibn al-Zubayr, so it was said to him: "The people are likely to have fighting among them, and we fear that they will prevent you." He said: "Indeed, there has been for you in the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) a good example. I will do as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did. I bear witness to you that I have made 'Umrah obligatory upon myself." Then he set out, and when he was at the outskirts of al-Bayda', he said: "What is the matter with Hajj and 'Umrah but that they are one? Bear witness." Ibn Rumh said: "I bear witness to you that I have made Hajj obligatory upon myself along with my 'Umrah." He offered a sacrificial animal which he had purchased at Qudayd, then he proceeded to declare his intention for both of them together until he arrived in Makkah. He performed Tawaf of the House and between al-Safa and al-Marwah, and did not add to that. He did not sacrifice, did not shave, did not cut his hair short, and did not exit the state of Ihram from anything he had entered into, until the Day of Sacrifice. Then he sacrificed and shaved, and he considered that he had fulfilled the Tawaf of Hajj and 'Umrah with his first Tawaf. And Ibn 'Umar said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did likewise." The Shaykh: His statement "with his first Tawaf" means the Sa'y, because the second Tawaf, the Tawaf al-Ifadah, is necessary. But if someone were to ask: Why did Ibn 'Umar say "I bear witness to you"? And is it recommended for a person, when he intends to perform one of the acts of worship, to say "I bear witness to you"? The answer is: This is a matter of teaching, not a matter of worship. That is, he intended by this witnessing to teach them that he had combined Hajj with 'Umrah. Otherwise, there is no need for it. And Ibn 'Umar, as you know, was a noble Companion and one of the jurists among the Companions, so he said that for the sake of teaching.
