The reciter: And Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna narrated to us, he said: Yahya, who is al-Qattan, narrated to us from 'Ubayd Allah, he said: Nafi' narrated to me that 'Abd Allah ibn 'Abd Allah and Salim ibn 'Abd Allah: When al-Hajjaj descended to fight Ibn al-Zubayr, they said to 'Abd Allah: "It will not harm you if you do not perform Hajj this year, for we fear that there will be fighting among the people that will prevent you from reaching the House." He said: "If I am prevented from it, I will do as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did, and I was with him when the disbelievers of Quraysh prevented him from the House. I bear witness that I have made 'Umrah obligatory upon myself." So he set out until he reached Dhu al-Hulayfah, and he intoned the talbiyah for 'Umrah. Then he said: "If my way is cleared, I will complete my 'Umrah, and if I am prevented from it, I will do as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did, and I was with him." Then he recited: "Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah is an excellent example for you." Then he traveled on until he was at the back of al-Bayda', and he said: "Their command is but one; if I am prevented from 'Umrah, I am prevented from Hajj. I bear witness that I have made Hajj obligatory upon myself along with 'Umrah." So he set out until he purchased sacrificial animals at Qudayd, then he performed one tawaf for both of them around the House and between al-Safa and al-Marwah, and then he did not break his state of ihram from either of them until he broke his state of ihram from both of them with Hajj on the Day of Sacrifice..

The Shaykh : In this hadith, the eagerness of Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) to visit the House by 'Umrah or Hajj is made clear. When he intended to set out for the House for 'Umrah, his two sons advised him and feared for him from fitnah (trial, discord or temptation). This was when al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf descended to the outskirts of Makkah to fight 'Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr. 'Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr had been pledged allegiance to as caliph in the Hijaz. This was because when Mu'awiyah ibn Yazid ibn Mu'awiyah died, the Muslims had no caliph; they remained for two months without an imam. So the people of authority and decision in Makkah pledged allegiance to 'Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr, and he remained as caliph. However, when 'Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan took over, he was not pleased with this and sent expeditions to fight him, and the most severe of them was al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf. When this fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) occurred and Ibn 'Umar wanted to go to Makkah, and his two sons advised him, he said that he would make 'Umrah obligatory upon himself. If he was prevented from it, he would do as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did, meaning the release from ihram due to being prevented, or otherwise he would proceed and the matter would be made easy for him, so he proceeded. But at Qudayd, he added Hajj to the 'Umrah and said: "Their command is but one," because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Umrah is included in Hajj," so their status is one. He entered the state of ihram for Hajj, and thereby he became one who combines them (qarin), and he had the sacrificial animals with him, and he proceeded until he completed his Hajj and 'Umrah.
