The Shaykh : In this is a sign among the signs of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), which is that this *tawr* (a large bowl), which is like a *tast* (a wide, shallow dish), how much was eaten from it? About three hundred people ate from it, and yet Anas says: “I do not know when I placed it or when I lifted it whether it was more when placed or when lifted.” This indicates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had a blessing in his food and drink, so it is one of the signs of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Know that the signs of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) are signs of Allah, because they are extraordinary, as they are matters that transcend the norm. The extraordinary indicates that Allah the Exalted is the Manager of the universe, and that He conducts affairs according to their norm and nature at times, which is the most common, and sometimes He conducts them contrary to the norm. In this is also the generosity of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), where he said, “Call for me so-and-so and so-and-so,” and he named people, and said, “and whoever you meet.” If someone asks: Does this hadith indicate the weakness of what the jurists (may Allah have mercy on them) said, that it is disliked to call a crowd, meaning for example that it is disliked for a person to stand at the door of the mosque and say, “O people, please come,” but rather he should select individuals, saying, “So-and-so, please come; so-and-so, so-and-so”? Do we say that this is a case of calling a crowd and that this indicates the weakness of what the jurists (may Allah have mercy on them) said? The answer is yes, this indicates the weakness of what the jurists (may Allah have mercy on them) said. But the jurists (may Allah have mercy on them) intended that if one calls a crowd, the response should not be appropriate, and this also is open to consideration, because they said if one calls a crowd… the response. So we say both are correct; both are permissible. It is permissible to call a crowd and say, “O people, please come,” and it is permissible for whoever is present to enter, and there is no blame in this. Yes.
