The Reciter: Qutaybah ibn Sa'id narrated to us, saying: Ja'far, meaning ibn Sulayman, narrated to us from al-Ja'd Abu Uthman from Anas ibn Malik, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) married and entered upon his wife. He said: My mother, Umm Sulaym, prepared a dish of hais and placed it in a large vessel. She said: O Anas, take this to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and say: My mother has sent this to you, and she sends her greetings to you and says: This is a small portion from us for you, O Messenger of Allah. He said: So I took it to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: My mother sends her greetings to you and says: This is a small portion from us for you, O Messenger of Allah. He said: Put it down. Then he said: Go and call for me so-and-so, so-and-so, and so-and-so, and whoever you meet, and he named certain men. He said: So I called those he named and those I met. He said: I asked Anas: How many were they? He said: About three hundred. And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: O Anas, bring the vessel. He said: So they entered until the veranda and the room were full. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Let them sit in circles of ten, and let each person eat from what is near him. He said: So they ate until they were full. He said: So a group went out and a group came in until they all had eaten. Then he said to me: O Anas, remove it. He said: So I removed it, and I do not know whether there was more when I placed it or when I removed it. He said: And groups of them sat talking in the house of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), while the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting and his wife had turned her face toward the wall. They became a burden on the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went out and greeted his wives, then returned. When they saw that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had returned, they thought that they had become a burden on him. He said: So they rushed to the door and all of them went out. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came until he lowered the curtain and entered, while I was sitting in the room. He did not stay but a short time until he came out to me, and this verse was revealed. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went out and recited them to the people: "O you who believe! Do not enter the houses of the Prophet except when you are permitted to enter for food, not anticipating its serving, but when you are invited, then enter, and when you have eaten, then disperse, and do not linger for conversation. Indeed, that used to be a burden on the Prophet, and He was not shy to tell you [the truth]." To the end of the verse. Al-Ja'd said: Anas ibn Malik said: I am the most recent of people to have been with these verses, and the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) were veiled..
