The questioner : His final question asks: When a person dies, does he go to Paradise or to the Fire after his death, or does he remain in the grave until the Day of Resurrection? We ask for clarification of this, along with adding some information about it. Thank you.

The Shaykh : As for the body of the deceased, it remains on the earth in the place where it was buried until the Day of Resurrection.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Allah the Exalted said:
And the Horn will be blown; and at once from the graves to their Lord they will hasten.
[Ya-Sin 36:51]
And He the Exalted said:
and behind them is a barrier until the Day they are resurrected.
[Al-Mu'minun 23:100]
So it remains on the earth. As for its soul, it is either in Paradise or in the Fire. Allah Blessed and Exalted is He said:
The ones whom the angels take in death, [being] good and pure; [the angels] will say, "Peace be upon you. Enter Paradise for what you used to do."
[An-Nahl 16:32]
Thus, He made clear that this saying occurs at the time of death. The meaning of this is that they enter Paradise on the day of their death, and this is only for the soul, not for the body. It is established in the hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that the deceased, if he is a believer, has a door opened to him in his grave toward Paradise, and he receives from its spirit and its bliss.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : As for the disbeliever, his soul is also taken to the punishment. Allah the Exalted said regarding the family of Pharaoh:
The Fire, they are exposed to it morning and evening. And the Day the Hour appears [it will be said], "Make the people of Pharaoh enter the severest punishment."
[Ghafir 40:46]
And He the Exalted said: ..

The questioner : Did you say "Enter"?

The Shaykh : "Enter."

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Yes?

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : In it is a reading:
Make the people of Pharaoh enter
[Ghafir 40:46]
Make the people of Pharaoh enter the severest punishment." وأدخِلوا ءال فرعون أشد العذاب
[Ghafir 40:46]
And in it:
And the Day the Hour appears [it will be said], "Make the people of Pharaoh enter the severest punishment."
[Ghafir 40:46]
.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : And He the Exalted said:
Indeed, those whom the angels take [in death] while wronging themselves - [the angels] will say, "In what [condition] were you?" They will say, "We were oppressed in the land." The angels will say, "Was not the earth of Allah spacious إن الذين توفاهم الملائكة ظالمي أنفسهم قالوا فيم كنتم قالوا كنا مستضعفين في الأرض قالوا ألم تكن أرض الله واسعة
[An-Nisa 4:97]
And He the Exalted said:
(50) And if you could but see when the angels take the souls of those who disbelieved... They are striking their faces and their backs and [saying], "Taste the punishment of the Burning Fire. (51) That is for what your hands have put forth [of evil] and because Allah is not ever unjust to His servants."
[Al-Anfal 8:50-51]
This is evidence that the deceased believer receives his reward in Paradise from the day of his death.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : And the disbeliever receives his punishment in the Fire from the day of his death. This is with regard to the soul, while the body remains on the earth until the Day of Resurrection.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : The soul may be connected to it, either in punishment or in bliss, as indicated by the hadiths. Yes.

The questioner : Yes, may Allah reward you.
