The questioner : This letter reached us from Jordan from the sister S.J. In her letter, she states that she is married and has three children, praise be to Allah. She says that she has physical weakness, and when she becomes pregnant, she falls severely ill, and when she gives birth to the child, she loses consciousness. Is it permissible for her to take birth control pills? May Allah guide you?

The Shaykh : The birth control pills, as mentioned to us, are harmful to the uterus and may cause ulcers in it. However, the attempt to prevent pregnancy is originally permissible, because the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) practiced coitus interruptus during the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and they were not prohibited from doing so. Nevertheless, it is contrary to what is preferable, as increasing the number of children is a prescribed and desired matter. However, given the harm indicated by the questioner, we say that there is nothing wrong with her taking these pills if her husband permits it and if her condition improves.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : And if she reaches a state where she feels that this harm no longer befalls her, she should stop taking them.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Yes.
