Q: I have a relative who has thirteen children, and we went to the doctor, and he said: Give her birth control pills; because her health is weak. Is this lawful or forbidden?
A: It is not permissible for the wife to use birth control pills out of dislike for having many children or out of fear of poverty from the expense of providing for them; because that contradicts
the objectives of the Shari'ah in encouraging the increase of offspring; and because of the bad opinion of Allah that it entails. It is permissible for her to take them to prevent pregnancy on account of her illness, an illness that pregnancy would harm her with, or because she does not give birth in a normal way, but needs a surgical operation at the time of delivery, and the like of this necessity. In such a case, she may take the pills to prevent pregnancy, unless it is known from the specialized doctors that taking them harms her in another way. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
