The Shaykh : Yes.

The Shaykh : Yes

The Shaykh :"... in language, the king's throne", the 'Arsh in language is the king's throne; this is its meaning in language. We mentioned this because these people who deny the divine attributes said that He rose above the 'Arsh, and that "rising above" has several meanings, and the 'Arsh has several meanings. The 'Arsh is used for the grape trellis, and it is used for such and such, and they listed several things for it. So we say to them: the 'Arsh in the Arabic language is not known except as the king's throne. The evidence is "Allah the Exalted said regarding Yusuf:
And he raised his parents upon the throne ورفع أبويه على العرش
[Yusuf 12:100]
"
meaning on the grape trellis, right? Not on the king's throne. "And He the Exalted said regarding the Queen of Saba:
and she has a great throne. ولها عرش عظيم
[An-Naml 27:23]
"
the throne upon which she sits, clear? So the 'Arsh in language is the king's throne, and the 'Arsh of the Most Merciful (Mighty and Majestic) is the one upon which He rose above, but it does not follow from the agreement of the 'Arsh with the 'Arsh that they are identical. It does not follow from the agreement in name that there is agreement in reality and manner. And this is clear, or not clear? Clear and tangible. You have a hand and the cat has a hand, and are they different or identical? Right?
The student: ...

The Shaykh : As for the name, there is no harm, but the reality and manner are different, yes. If the cat wants to defend itself, it extends its claws and they become long, but if you trim your nails on Friday and someone comes to you on Saturday wanting to fight you, do you extend them?
The student: ...

The Shaykh : Hehe, yes, O 'Abd al-'Aziz.

The questioner : The ant...

The Shaykh : The ant has a hand. The point is that this is a thing. So the 'Arsh upon which the Most Merciful rose above is not like the 'Arsh which Allah the Exalted attributed to the Queen of Saba. And as for, yes?

The questioner : ...

The Shaykh : We say as it came in the hadith:
Allah the Exalted was in a void, with no air above Him and no air below Him كان الله تعالى في عماء ما فوقه هواء وما تحته هواء
Sahih Ibn Hibban 62:4
Yes, we say so. If you were, if you were... on this basis, we also say regarding the heavens: say "what is in the heavens," because where was Allah before the creation of the heavens? And we do not say that Allah rose above the 'Arsh in the sense that He needs it. We do not say so. We say that He rose above the 'Arsh (Mighty and Majestic) in greatness, majesty, and glory, and the meaning is not that He needs the 'Arsh such that if the 'Arsh were removed, He would fall. No one from the Salaf says this.
