The questioner : From Manfuha, we received this letter from the citizen Muhammad Sulayman Ali al-Shahri. He says to Nur 'ala al-Darb: My question is that there are people who are skilled in excellent writing in bold script, and some of these writings, they write a verse in the shape of a man praying. Is this permissible? Please inform us, and thank you?

The Shaykh : What appears to me is that it is not permissible, and that this is an instance of excessive rigor and affectation. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The overzealous have perished هلك المتنطعون
Furthermore, Arabic writing with Arabic letters must undergo modification if it is forced to take the form of a worshipper. Moreover, the form of the worshipper may include, or be among the forms, that of one in prostration. In that case, the top of the Qur'an or the top of the page and its bottom would be different, and the Qur'an would be depicted as one in prostration. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
And see that I have been forbidden to recite the Qur'an in the state of bowing and prostration. ألا وإني نهيت أن أقرأ القرأن راكعا أو ساجدا
Sahih Muslim 479a
.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Therefore, anything that suggests that this Qur'an is in a lower position is prohibited. And since the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited a person from reciting the Qur'an while bowing or in prostration, because that is a posture of extreme humility, and the Qur'an should be in a place of standing, which is a place of upright posture and elevation, the conclusion is that we see this writing as not permissible. Furthermore, it is an exaggeration to call people to the Shari'ah of Allah with such matters.
On this occasion, I would also like to point out what is hung in some gatherings of certain verses.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : For this is also one of the matters that are religious innovations and newly invented, and even if those who do it intend either seeking blessing or reminding, this is not appropriate, because seeking blessing in this manner with the Noble Qur'an has not been transmitted. As for reminding, in reality, it does not usually serve as a reminder.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Rather, you will find in this gathering where these verses are hung, there is idle talk, cursing, and insulting, or from the prohibited actions, such as smoking or listening to what is not permissible to listen to, or the like. And this is undoubtedly like mocking the verses of Allah.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Where the verses of Allah the Exalted are above the heads of the people sitting, and they are rebelling against Allah the Exalted with sins, cursing, insulting, backbiting, and the like. Therefore, we see that the Muslims have no need for these matters, which are done without reflection and without consideration. And the best of guidance is the guidance of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the righteous Salaf, and the righteous Salaf of this Ummah.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : So what I advise my Muslim brothers is not to hang such verses in their homes, because they contain the harms we mentioned earlier. And praise be to Allah, the mushafs are sufficient for this. And whoever wants the words of Allah and to enjoy its recitation or to reflect on its verses will find it written in the mushafs. And Allah is the One who grants success.
