Do they have patience with these titles and this harm and remain upon what they are upon of truth, or do they turn back and retreat on their heels? As was found with some people who were blamed and criticized after their Islam, they turned back from Islam, may Allah protect us from that. And this is Abu Talib saying:
"Were it not for the blame or fear of insult, *** I would have found me lenient and clear regarding that".
This is also part of the wisdom in Allah the Exalted making enemies for the prophets and their followers who cast doubt on them and on what they are upon. Allah the Exalted says. The author said: "And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) encountered a great deal of this". This is clear to everyone.

So those oppressive polytheists assigned to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions titles of disparagement and mockery, such as: sorcerer, madman, soothsayer, and liar". This is not exhaustive, but they assigned many titles indicating their disdain for the Messenger (may Allah praise him and grant him peace) and their casting doubt on him. Whereas before the prophethood, they called him the Truthful and the Trustworthy, but when he came with what contradicted what they were upon, they assigned to him bad titles.
He said: "And when the people of knowledge and faith are the heirs of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), they encountered from the people of discourse and religious innovation what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions encountered from those polytheists. So every sect among these sects assigned to the people of the Sunnah titles of disparagement and mockery of what Allah has absolved them of, either out of their ignorance of the truth, where they assumed the validity of what they are upon and the invalidity of what the people of the Sunnah are upon, or out of bad intent, where they intended thereby to turn people away from the people of the Sunnah and to be biased toward their own opinions, despite knowing their corruption".

Or the driver for them to these titles is, he says: bad intent, where they intended thereby to invalidate the truth and establish the falsehood.
So the leaders of the innovators, the majority of them, are driven to this by bad intent, because ignorance of the truth is far from these great imams and callers. But their common people, yes, they are the ones who may be ignorant.
So the result is that those who followed the Messenger (may Allah praise him and grant him peace) did not escape from the people of evil and the people of innovation. Rather, the people of innovation assigned to them bad titles to turn people away from what they are upon, either out of their ignorance of the truth and their assumption that what they are upon is the truth and that these people contradict it, or out of bad intent and the desire to transgress. And Allah knows best.
