The reader: "Imam Ahmad narrated with a sound chain from Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: قلت لعمر رضي الله عنه : إن لي كاتباً نصرانياً قال : ما لك؟ قاتلك الله ، أما سمعت الله يقول : يا أيها الذين آمنوا لا تتخذوا اليهود والنصارى أولياء بعضهم أولياء بعضٍ ألا اتخذت حنيفا ؟ قال : قلت : يا أمير المؤمنين لي كتابته وله دينه . قال : لا أكرمهم إذ أهانهم الله ولا أُعزهم إذ أذلهم الله ولا أدنيهم إذ أقصاهم الله I said to 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): I have a Christian scribe. He said: What is the matter with you? May Allah kill you. Have you not heard Allah say: O you who believe, do not take the Jews and the Christians as allies; some of them are allies of others? Why did you not take a Hanif? He said: I said: O Commander of the Faithful, I have his writing and he has his religion. He said: I do not honor them when Allah has humiliated them, nor do I exalt them when Allah has humbled them, nor do I bring them close when Allah has kept them at a distance.. And what the meaning of the Book points to: the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and the Sunnah of his Rightly Guided Caliphs, upon which the jurists agreed, is to oppose them and avoid imitating them.
