Commentary on Iqtida' al-Sirat al-Mustaqim-07a

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reader: "Harb said: Ahmad ibn Nasr narrated to us, and Hubban ibn Musa narrated to us, saying: Ibn al-Mubarak was asked about these Kermani sandals, and he did not like them, and he said: 'Are these not sufficient for you instead of those?'"
Al-Khallal narrated from Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al-Duqali, who said: 'I asked Sa'id ibn 'Amir about wearing the Saturday sandals, and he said: 'The dress of our Prophet is dearer to us than the dress of the Brahmins of the King of India, and if they were in the mosque of Madinah, they would be expelled from Madinah.'
Sa'id ibn 'Amir al-Dubai was the imam of the people of Basra in knowledge and religion, and one of the sheikhs of Imam Ahmad. Yahya ibn Sa'id al-Qattan said, and Sa'id ibn 'Amir was mentioned to him, so he said: 'He is the sheikh of the city since forty years.' And Abu Mas'ud ibn al-Furat said: 'I have not seen in Basra anyone like Sa'id ibn 'Amir.'
Al-Maimuni said: 'I saw Abu 'Abdullah with his turban under his chin, and he disliked anything other than that, and he said: 'The Arabs wear their turbans under their chins.' And Ahmad said in the narration of al-Hasan ibn Muhammad: 'It is disliked that the turban not be under the chin, with strong dislike, and he said: 'Only the Jews, Christians, and Magi wear turbans like that.'
For this reason, Ahmad also disliked wearing things that were the emblem of the oppressors in his time, such as black and the like. He and others disliked closing the eyes in prayer, and he said: 'It is from the action of the Jews.'
Abu Hafs al-'Akbari narrated with his chain from Bilal ibn Abi Hudhr, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Be rough, be coarse, wear sandals, and walk barefoot تمعددوا ، واخشوشنوا ، وانتعلوا ، وامشوا حفاة
. This is well-known and preserved from 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) that he wrote to the Muslims with this, and its mention will come, if Allah wills"
.

The Shaykh : Yes.
The student: That he wrote to the Muslims with this.

The Shaykh : It is authentic with us, and it is better with this.
The reader: "That he wrote to the Muslims with this, and its mention will come, if Allah wills, in the words of the Rightly Guided Caliphs".

The Shaykh : As for his saying:
Wear sandals and walk barefoot انتعلوا وامشوا حفاة
, it has come from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he used to prohibit excessive comfort and order walking barefoot at times. And so it is recommended that a person walk barefoot at times and wearing sandals at times, in obedience to the command of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and so that he does not need to touch the ground with his foot on any day. When a person accustoms his foot to comfort and softness, he cannot walk, and some people say, 'I cannot walk on the ground at all, even if it is smooth, because I have accustomed myself to what? To always wear sandals or to wear socks with leather socks, so his foot cannot bear anything at all.' Has the time come, Hajjaj?
The Reciter: Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send blessings and peace upon His servant and Messenger, our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
After that: The Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said in the book *Iqtida' al-Sirat al-Mustaqim*: "Al-Tirmidhi said: Qutaybah narrated to us, and Ibn Lahi'ah narrated to us from 'Amr ibn Shu'ayb from his father from his grandfather: That the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He is not one of us who resembles other than us, no who resembles the Jews ليس منا من تشبه بغيرنا لا تشبهوا باليهود
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2695Da'if (Darussalam)
