The reciter: Qutaybah ibn Sa'id and Muhammad ibn 'Abbad narrated to us, and the wording is that of Ibn 'Abbad. They said: Hatim, who is Ibn Isma'il, narrated to us from Yazid ibn Abi 'Ubayd, the freed slave of Salama ibn al-Akwa', from Salama ibn al-Akwa', who said:
The Shaykh : In my copy: "for two rewards."
The reciter: ... "This is how it is in most copies: 'for two rewards' (la-ajran), and in some: 'for two rewards' (la-ajrayn). Both are correct, but the second is more common and more eloquent, while the first is a term for four Arab tribes".

And Qutaybah differed from Muhammad in the hadith in two words, and in the narration of Ibn 'Abbad:.
We set out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to Khaybar, and we traveled by night. A man from the group said to 'Amir ibn al-Akwa', "Will you not let us hear some of your poetry?" 'Amir was a man of poetry, so he dismounted and led the group in a chant, saying: "O Allah, had it not been for You, we would not have found guidance, nor would we have given charity, nor would we have prayed. So forgive us, in exchange for You, what we have followed. And steady our feet if we encounter [the enemy], and cast tranquility upon us, for when we are called, we come, and with the call, they press upon us." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Who is this one leading the chant?" They said, "'Amir." He said, "May Allah have mercy on him." A man from the group said, "It is obligatory, O Messenger of Allah, if only you would let us enjoy his company." We came to Khaybar and besieged them until a severe famine struck us. Then he said, "Indeed, Allah has opened it for you." When the people spent the evening of the day it was opened to them, they lit many fires. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "What are these fires? What are you burning?" They said, "Meat." He said, "What meat?" They said, "The meat of domestic donkeys." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Pour it out and break the pots." A man said, "Or should they pour it out and wash the pots?" He said, "Or that." When the people lined up for battle, 'Amir's sword was short, so he reached out with it to strike a Jew's leg, but the tip of his sword turned back and struck 'Amir's knee, and he died from it. When they returned, Salama said, and he was holding my hand: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw me silent, he said, "What is the matter with you?" I said to him, "May my father and mother be a ransom for you, they claim that 'Amir's deeds have been nullified." He said, "Who said that?" I said, "So-and-so, so-and-so, and Usayd ibn Hudayr al-Ansari." He said, "He who said that has lied. Indeed, he has two rewards.

The reader:
The Prophet raised two fingers and added, "He (i.e. Amir) was a persevering struggler in the Cause of Allah and there are few 'Arabs who achieved the like of (good deeds) 'Amir had done."
