Benefits of the Hadith (And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wiped his head, moving his hands forward and backward . . . ).

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : And in the hadith are benefits to which we have previously referred, namely that wiping is necessary. So if one washes it instead of wiping it, is that sufficient? Some scholars said that it is sufficient because it is a transition from the lighter to the heavier, but the correct view is that it is not sufficient because it is contrary to what Allah commanded. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He who did any act for which there is no sanction from our behalf, that is to be rejected. من عمل عملًا ليس عليه أمرنا فهو ردّ
Sahih Muslim 1718b
Therefore, there is a third opinion in this issue, which is that washing is sufficient if one passes his hand over his head, because if he passes his hand over his head, what does he become? He becomes one who is wiping, but he has increased the water of the wiping. This opinion has a share of consideration, but if a person wants to go to extremes and be overly strict, it might be said that it is not valid, even if he wipes his hand after washing it, due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Abdullah reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: Ruined, were those who indulged in hair-splitting. He (the Holy Prophet) repeated this thrice. هلك المتنطّعون -قالها ثلاثًا-
Sahih Muslim 2670
and his disapproval of those who continued fasting with extreme strictness. It can be said that even if he wipes his head along with washing it, it falls under the category of going to extremes, and going to extremes is destruction.
