The questioner : When we go to school, my friends and I usually see the students gathered in a specific area, and we do not know most of them. Is there any problem with exchanging greetings between us and them, because I find joy in the heart and peace of conscience in the greeting?

The Shaykh : A young woman should not greet a young man if he is not among her acquaintances, her mahram (a relative one may not marry), or her relatives, because although it brings joy to the heart as you say, it invites fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) and causes attachment to the one who greeted. Likewise, she becomes attached to the one she greeted. Therefore, it is disliked (makruh) for a young woman, and it may reach the level of being forbidden (haram) for her to greet a young man who is not among her mahram, her relatives, or her acquaintances.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Yes.
