The questioner : It is said that one of the Friday preachers spoke and said that offering condolences to the family of the deceased is not permissible except in the cemetery, and that neither the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) nor his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) did so. Please clarify this for us?

The Shaykh : We clarify this by saying that the intention of the brother the preacher is that gathering for condolences is not prescribed, such as the family of the deceased and their relatives gathering in a house and people coming to them. If this is the case, it is not prescribed, and the preacher is correct in saying that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the Rightly Guided Caliphs did not do it. For this reason, some scholars said that sitting in one’s house to receive condolences is disliked, and some said it is forbidden and not permissible. Rather, a person is offered condolences wherever he is found: in the mosque, in the market, in the cemetery, or in any place, as long as he has not forgotten the calamity. However, if he has forgotten it and its effect has passed from him, there is no benefit in renewing the condolences, because in this state, the condolences serve as a reminder of the calamity. The purpose of condolences is to strengthen one’s resolve to bear patience with the calamity. If it is missed due to forgetting and the passage of time, then no condolences are offered. Yes.
